This was the day Sir Alex Ferguson sent shockwaves through the footballing world by announcing his retirement. It’s a good day to bury bad news so luckily at least some of the less impressive aspects of today’s performance didn’t make the first line.
Rovers looked dangerous whenever they got the ball down. We broke down both flanks and created chances. The first goal came when a cross was badly cleared for Tad to half-volley the opener. In no time we let Denton back into the game for 1-1. Next Big Nathan won a flick on and Bills return pass was intercepted only for the centre-half to pass back to the keeper who let it roll in under his foot. Via a rule brought in by Rovers legend, goalscorer and former manager Dave Lavelle the goal is given to Bills who was the last Rovers player to touch the ball. The Rovers history books show Dave once scored a hattrick via this method from three throw-ins! Rovers continued to create chances and after the ball ricochet off a number of players in the box, the keeper tried to collect but mishandled under pressure from Big Nathan who took it round him to take Rovers to 3-1. Their number 12 who was their best player and tormented the backline the whole game popped up again to leave things 3-2 at the break. Bills was also unlucky as his square pass to Big Nathan for a goal was ruled offside.
We were basically asked to make an improvement in the second half as this wasn’t good enough.
For 15 minutes we played some superb passing football culminating in Dec popping up to tap home from 3 yards. By all account the first goal he’s scored with his foot this season. The intensity dropped out of the game again and Denton managed to level the tie at 4-4 with a hattrick from number 12. Best not to mention the fact the opposition manager was playing upfront and had to take a rest every 5 minutes. Bills was again unlucky not to win a penalty when brought down by the keeper. A number of subs were made and after Fraser’s introduction he weaved past 3 or 4 players and crashed what would have been a goal of the season contender against the crossbar. He was rewarded with an assist via a great cross to Anto who popped up at the back post to add his name to this seasons goalscoring chart. Great display from Anto today, great energy going up and down all game. Also a mention to Rovers legend Dennis who it was great to see back in his famous number 10 shirt. Would be great to see you back next season.
It could have been more today. Perhaps some of the play summed up by the fact Rovers had a 5 on 1 attack but got caught offside. Below par, should have had more goals in one end and fewer in the other but typically we showed the character of the squad by snatching a just about deserved victory. Determination summed up by Whitey who cleared 2 off the line and made another last ditch interception to prevent a goal.
Goals: Tad, Bills (via bizarre Rovers by-law invented in 1898, last touch before an own goal!?!), Big Nathan, Dec, Anto
