Rovers started knowing they had to overturn a 4-2 defeat in the league from 2 weeks ago. Despite an early break from Rovers it was Wanderers who took control of proceedings. They played some good football in the middle of the park but their main option was the long ball which for the most part Rovers dealt with. Nevertheless on 20mins Rovers failed to clear after a few miss kicks and the Wanderers drilled home from 20yards to go in front. For the rest of the half things didn’t seem to be working for Rovers. Our best chances came from corners and set pieces from which we had numerous half chances but no clear openings.
At half-time we knew we had to have a greater effect on the game. The second half started with some good passing. However Rovers gave the ball away on 35 yards a neat interchange saw Wanderers move into the box and tuck home what at this stage seemed an unassailable second. On 70 minutes we finally saw a game changer with the introduction on Pricey, Nathan and Harris. Nathan began to dominate the aerial battle which let Rovers stream forward in large numbers. Shots from Tad, and Pricey off the post went close. Nathan also broke forward with a menacing run down the left which was just cleared for a Rovers corner. It was from a corner Rovers got back in the game. The corner was cleared but fell to Pricey on 25 yards. His bullet of an effort took a nick of a Wanderers head and flew in the top corner to give Rovers hope. At this stage it was all Rovers, we poured forward but time was running out. On 90mins a blatant push on Bills saw Rovers awarded a spot kick, Bills converted to send the match into extra-time.
The momentum was clearly with us. At this stage we’d figured Wanderers out and were finally showing our clear superiority. The first half of extra-time saw numerous goal mouth scrambles, Nathan went close, Ross headed a ball back across goal, it bounced along the goal line only to carry on straight through. Wanderers still had the counter to release some pressure and it was at this stage Ricky pulled out an heroic save tipping the ball from the bottom left corner somehow onto the underside of the crossbar to be cleared to safety. Neither team managed to break the deadlock and for the second year running we had penalties. We lost the toss, we went second and missed our first two. Wanderers scored all theirs. Ross pulled it back to 1-3 but Wanderers won 4-1. Fair play to all the lads who stepped up, it just wasn’t our day for penalties. It was Rovers who lost the final not anyone brave enough to accept the challenge of the shootout. We go again next week.
