This was a must win game for Rovers against a Levenshulme side that had won 10 in a row in the league. We were all up for the game but got a shock to the system early doors with Levenshulme’s pace, movement and direct play. They took advantage and were clearly at home on a very big pitch they were used to making full use of. To be fair I’d say they were a level, maybe two, better than any opposition we’d encountered since Valient in last season’s cup final win or maybe a county cup side. To our credit despite going 1-0 down we dug in and battled hard to stay in the game early on. Against the run of play Bills drew us level with a driven freekick. Next Dee won the ball in midfield and a beauty of a pass from the outside of Bills right foot set Bran away to put us in front. We weren’t finished and the next attack saw the ball break to Masterman on the left whose shot was somehow smothered off the line. Somehow the ref found four minutes of time to add to the first period and Levenshulme managed to draw level.
In the second half it was all Rovers. We had numerous headed chances from Dec, Nathan and Dee but just couldn’t get the goal. Against the run of play now Levenshulme countered and despite Dec’s sprint to clear off the line before clashing with the post the ball fell kindly to their forward whose neat finish found the far corner. In another attack a downward header was brilliantly saved by Ricky a la Gordon Banks 1970 vs Brazil. Rovers pushed again, the best chance fell to Tad who could only blaze wide after being played clean through after a lovely flick from Bills. Another injury struck Rovers injury hit season and Bran broke the same bone in his foot as the Posh game in October. This was a big blow to Rovers ahead of the cup finals as he’d been in fine form since his return. Rovers battled hard but couldn’t equalize. The defeat left us 7 points behind Levenshulme with 6 available, the league will have to wait another year. We’ll know this opposition better the next time we play them. Their twelve won everything in the air in the middle of the park. Their forwards were quick and skilful but if you could get beyond the front six their defence were there for the taking and they’re prone to conceding goals. This was a day Rovers could be proud of. We rose to the occasion and matched them after an early onslaught and the result could so easily have been different on another day.
