The wind swept across the 3G pitch from the left wing to the right in the first half. Rovers had the tough task of beating a team for the third time this season. Never an easy job and it will be even tougher next time around. However some of the play in the first half was excellent. Both Tad and Anto on the right and Whitey and Harris on the left linked up well to open up the opposition. This was aided with good link up play from front to back including the whole team. However Rovers just couldn’t create that killer opportunity in the final third. Brandon and Pricy both went close. Anto nearly copied Remy goal for QPR from last week with his cross come shot. Harris sent through Tad from the left but the shot was dragged too far across goal.
It was all positives at half time but we know it’s a results business and good football counts for nothing if the ball doesn’t go into the goal. The task wasn’t helped by a hefty clash between Owen and Dec from a rare Urmston attack. You should see what happens when they’re on opposing teams! Dee took up the keepers’ position and we had to shift the team around.
The second half didn’t carry on with the same pattern. Things were a lot more even and Urmston threatened a lot more. Their tricky winger kept floating around the pitch to try to get on the ball and it caused us some problems. At the other end when Rovers broke we always looked a big threat. There were numerous short passes and snap shots but we just couldn’t get that clear cut chance. At the other end Urmston cut through with the above mentioned player going through on goal. Dee was just beaten to the ball and despite their player making a big meal of it Urmston won a penalty, 0-1. We kept plugging away and better chances started coming with the increased intensity caused by time running out. Pricey went through down the right, from a tight angle his shot crashed off the woodwork. Mo’s header glanced the top of the bar. Finally the breakthrough came. Dec won the ball in the centre and played in Bran who cut in from his tight angle on the right to tuck home the equaliser with his trusty left foot. No less than was deserved. With Rovers still throwing everything forward Urmston did still look dangerous on the counter. However with time running out the ball fell to Tad in the middle of the park. The defence splitting pass saw the keeper rush out. Nathan challenged and the ball fell to Bran to pass into the open goal, 2-1. There was great character and belief in the second half. It wasn’t quite as pretty as the first but we all did the business and got the points.
