Today was a classic case of the irresistible force against the immovable object. Fairplay to both teams for playing competitive football in a good spirit. The wind was a key factor in proceedings, gusting against Rovers in the first half.
The game was strangely subdued early on. With virtually their first attack Rovers won a freekick just inside the Caspian half at the left back position. Mike’s ball in was met by Dec at the far post. His header back across goal bounced into space, Fraser was the fox in the box that reacted first to head Rovers into an early lead. From this point Caspian settled into the game and started to stroke the ball around. With time Rovers found themselves being pushed further into their own half. The wind was clearly at work and Rovers struggled to get up the pitch. Rovers defended numerous corners, crosses and diagonal balls with a really compact disciplined style. However eventually the ball fell kindly in the box for the Caspian forward. There was a massive hint of handball but he tucked the ball away to level proceedings. Caspian then had a second big chance when The Cat got a fingertip to the ball which glanced the post on its way to a Caspian corner.
At half-time we knew that we’d done a great job to be 1-1 having played against the wind. The aim was to utilize our advantage in the second half and book a place in a second final.
The second half started slowly. Both teams were adapting to their new conditions with the wind. Rovers were slowly getting Caspian pinned back. However a Rovers corner was cleared upfield. With Rovers out of shape, especially Stuart who was caught miles out of position (Tad who was upfront ran back 90yards to fill the whole at left back), a cross deflected off Tad and fell luckily to the Caspian forward who made no mistake to put Caspian ahead. Clearly no one blamed Tad for his attempted heroics as we knew the blame lay squarely with Stuart. His time-wasting at corners was clearly feeding into his general performance. This was a wake-up call to Rovers. However things were not quite clicking. At 1-2 down The Cat pulled off a superb save. A long high shot was dipping into the goal, it swirled 720degrees on its way down only to be brilliant tipped wide. With substitutions imminent Rovers countered. A cleared Caspian corner was met by Dec who challenged and headed upfield. Tad took the ball off him in the centre circle and spread the ball to Masterman at right back. He linked up with Nathan and broke forward. A one two with Tad broke Rovers into the box from the right wing. Mike drove forward, dummied to shoot and tucked his cross come shot in the far corner. A great move and team goal. Box to box and in Bills words “the best team goal from Rovers all season”. [not quite sure I’ve got this one right, it’s the best we came up with in the pub, if anyone has a correction message me and I’ll modify it]. Within no time Mike swung in another freekick from the left wing, the keeper palmed it out only for Dec so to continue his scoring streak from midfield to nod home the winner. With Caspian pushing for an equalizer The Cat made two further outstanding saves, one from point blank range. A superb performance today. Anto also did a great job, first tracking his marker across the 18yard box before putting in a great block on the edge of the six yard box to maintain Rovers advantage.
The squad has had to deal with all sorts of challenges this season. Today was a great example. With several first team contenders missing all 13 who played did the business. Everyone put in a performance to stake their place in the team. This sends out a warning to those who weren’t there. Especially as the central midfield duo were in Stew’s words, “the best he’d ever seen play for Rovers”. There will be tonnes of games to play after Easter and it will take everyone to give 100% Wednesday nights and Sundays. Nothing is won in March, we’re going for 3 trophies but could easily end up empty handed. There is competition in every position and what better incentive in the next few games than to nail down a place in one or both cup finals! So after Easter, as G says, “LETS HAVE IT LADS”!!! … starts with training this Thursday ;-)
Goals: Fraser, Masterman, Dec

A new category but G told Mike to take the freekick for the first goal. He told Dec to get in the box for the third. Finally as Bills said, the second goal was straight off the training ground. Substitutions were made at good times for maximum impact. Great job.
