With a strong squad we were asked to provide the intensity with which we finished our last friendly encounter. Rovers didn’t disappoint and most of the first 20mins was played with Burlington pegged into their own half. This was the bad half of the pitch which cut up badly. With time the pressure grew with a number of corners. Eventually Dec connected at the far post to head Rovers into a deserved lead. There were also a couple of goal mouth scrambles with the ball sticking agonizingly in the box. The best chance to double the lead came when the ball broke free to Ross at the far post. Unfortunately the Ref put him off to blaze over.
Burlington were patient and gradually gained more territory and possession. This culminated in a mix up at the back and Burlington passing into the open goal 1-1. This was completely against the run of play as Burlington hadn’t yet created any chances of their own. With time they did, a header forced Ricky to backpedal and at full stretch tip the ball onto the bar, the relieved defence hacked the ball to safety. Next a Rovers counter down the left by Harris saw Rovers come forward, the ball found its way square to Bills who laid the ball square for Tad to drill Rovers back in front with 60 seconds of the half remaining. Quick pressure soon had Rovers back in possession. On the right corner of the box Bills and Nathan combined to set up Tad who crossed, somewhat foolishly considering both strikers were stood 2 yards away, however Rovers had numbers in the box and Mo’s glancing header found the top corner 3-1.
The main point at half-time was to win the second half, keep the intensity and not sit back and invite pressure.
It was a fairly even start to the second half. The side Rovers were defending was completely cut up with the ball sticking all over. Massive credit goes to the defence. Communication was good, challenges were made when required and Rovers presented a solid back five unit plus two subs that were made. A second half clean sheet in the most difficult conditions (a cricket score in on the pitch behind us emphasizes this: Hybrid 8-6 Withington Wanderers). At the other end a good run down the left by Mo put Rovers on the attack. His cross was spilt by the keeper to allow Tad to tap home from close range. Great work by Nathan led him to cross from the left onto Bills head, from 4.2 yards our goal machine could only find the keeper. Clearly sticking to multiple assists today, saving the goals for later. At 4-1 a long range effort was flying in the bottom corner for Ricky to save and push the ball to safety. This was great goalkeeping after not being tested for some time. Burlington were pushing to save their last chance of silverware this year, with gaps at the back Nathan beat the last defender for pace and was hacked down when through one on one. Red card for Burlington. With time running out Owen skipped past two defenders in the box and the ball fell to Brandon who found the bottom corner to round off a great victory and performance. Got to be the same again next week against a Caspian side that’s taking their league by storm.
REF WATCH 10/10
Didn't get 100% but at least 95% decisions correct. Reffed with a minimum of fuss even when the game briefly threatened the heat up. Third time I've seen the league chairman ref one of our games and another superb display.
