Rovers travelled to the Oldham hills once again knowing that a point or more from the game would keep the opposition below them in the table. Oldham started the better of the two teams and as is becoming a familiar story, Rovers found themselves behind in the opening quarter of an hour; Oldham seized the ascendancy at this point and scored a second shortly after. Possession was fairly even throughout the first-half and it was towards the end of this period that the greens started to create more chances.
The second half produced a better performance with Rovers showing more belief and composure, using the ball more effectively. Graham made some tactical changes; Jess moving up front, Alison F taking her place on the right and Amanda and Leanne being pushed up front to give Rovers more attacking options, Cris took Amanda’s place between the sticks. Rovers dominance was starting to pay off and they were awarded a penalty shortly into the second-half after a trip in the box; unfortunately though Rovers’ reliable penalty taker, Rachel put the spot-kick narrowly past the left-hand post. Rovers’ heads might have dropped at this point but they continued to battle and their rewards came around the hour mark when Chloe beat the offside trap and slotted the ball past the oncoming Oldham goalkeeper to make it 2-1. It was not all one-way traffic in the second-half though and Cris played well in goal, communicating effectively with her defence and in the end keeping a clean sheet in the half.
The introduction of Leanne gave Rovers some fresh legs up front and Amanda toiled and harried the Oldham defenders as the midfield continued to play dangerous balls up to the forwards; the pressure soon paid off with another good ball from the midfield over the top of the defenders who were playing a very high line, and Chloe shot high past the ‘keeper into the net to make it 2-2.
Rovers will be encouraged with this display and will look to build on it in their next game against Curzon Ashton, a team they have never beaten and who are only one place above them in the league.
Players’ player of the match – there were not enough responses for one winner this week. All thirteen players showed great character and belief to battle back from two-goals down at half-time. Well played everyone.
