For the second time in three weeks Rovers were looking for a response after a disappointing result the previous week. The start to the match was not what Rovers were looking for. Some careless play at the back saw Rovers give the ball away on the backline, Knights forward went through on goal only for Ricky to make a great one-on-one save, the recovering defenders cleared the ball to safety. As the game continued Rovers gradually got the wind in their sails and started to play their football and apply pressure on the Knights goal. The main disappointment was the failure to create any clear cut chances or really test the Knights keeper. Midway through the first half a reckless tackle on Stew Mason saw him have to leave the field for Yousef. The resulting freekick saw Ross go close with a late run at the back post. Later in the half Ross arrived late again and just fail to reach the ball at the back post, a la Gascoigne vs Germany in Euro 96. There was a lot of decent build up pay down both flanks and around the area but the moves lacked a killer ball. Harris went close with a Bergkamp-esque effort from the left that just didn’t curl back enough. On the stroke of half-time Tad went close with a glancing header that drifted just wide.
The main message at half-time was to keep going, keep playing football and most importantly be patient.
Now playing into the wind Rovers continued looking for the breakthrough and it didn’t take long. Fraser out wide on the right found Bills feet, Bills in turn put Mo through on goal and showing great strength against his marker Mo showed great composure to put Rovers in front. A great move with three players contributing, which I suppose means they made a triangle to deadly effect. Soon after Bills crossed from wide right to find Harris at the back post, somehow the defender and keeper kept the ball from crossing the line. Bills almost got on the scoresheet himself, his lob from 40 yards bounced just in front of the net only to go agonizingly just over the bar. Soon enough Rovers did double the lead, Bills corner found Dec who powered his header into the goal. Two assists for Bills and you have to complement his great corner and freekick delivery over the last few games. It’s fair to say Knight did have a better second half and Rovers had to sit deeper with the wind against them. For the most part we kept them quiet but a fine finish saw Knights pull a goal back and leave Rovers under pressure to get the result their play deserved. At 2-1 a ball into the Rovers box from the right had beaten the defence only for the decent shot to glance the bar and go over. Now Rovers redoubled there efforts and at the other end Mo was hacked down in the box to get the penalty he didn’t get the week before. There was some debate over who should take it, Brandon stepped up and having already gone close after another fine rovers move coolly hit the penalty down the middle to put the result beyond doubt. A fine return from Brandon, looked sharp and dangerous and another great boost to the squad for the rest of the season.

Disclaimer: This was 6 hours ago, Swansea have made history beating Bradford 5-0 in the League Cup Final since then, I think it’s mostly there but not necessarily in the right order, message me with any corrections.
