Rovers first game on Grass since early December turned out to be a lively encounter between 2 good football teams.
Rovers fell behind early on when we failed to clear the ball in the area and Stockport made it 1 nil.
This seemed to wake the Greens up and with the down hill advantage Rovers started to look dangerous. Amanda and Rachel went close with good efforts and it was Amanda who handed Rovers the leveler when Rovers were awarded a free kick 35 yards out . Amanda who has scored on this pitch with a similar goal smashed it home great Goal 1 each. The greens were now taking charge going close with a few corners then Amanda nearly got her second goal but with the keeper beaten the post came to Stockports rescue.
Good work down the left saw Sonia and Rachel G combine and then switch the ball to the right where Dani unleashed a long range effort to give Rovers a 2 one lead. There seemed to be some history between Dani and yesterdays opponents. Dan came in for some rough treatment but her goal was a perfect reply.
With Rovers looking all set to take the lead going in to the break . Afc had other ideas and a good move and well taken finish meant it was 2 each at half time.
Second half and playing up the Mountain
Rovers wet for it straight from the whistle and should have been back in The lead but good goal keeping and a bit of wayward shooting meant the Greens had to wait to take the lead.
When it did come it was another fine goal. Amanda's corner found Rachel G who made no mistake with a power full header to make it 3 - 2 Rovers.
We had chances to extend the lead but it was NT to be.
With ten Min's to go and with very little match time. AFC Stockport began to apply pressure. Rovers were defending what seemed like corner after corner followed by free kick after free kick. But the Greens attacked every ball to keep Stockport at bay.
However similar to the end of the first half there was to be a sting in the tale right at the end.
AFC were given a very soft pen to make it 3each and in injury time Rovers bad luck struck again when an own goal handed Stockport the winner in a very entertaining encounter.
Managers Point Of View
I think the players enjoyed yesterdays game.
From my point it was a really good game and every player from1 to 11 played there part.
We said before the game it was not about the result and it was about match time for the players.
Yesterdays performance was of a high standard and on another day we would have added to the goal tally.
Great to see 3 different types of goals including a corner at last
All so great to see the set piece defending which was excellent.
Players Player Of The Match
First to reply can decide.
Managers Player
Not going to pick one player out as this was more about the team.
Sam made 3 top class saves yesterday. Cris Ruth and Kath pushed the play and handled the pitch very well. Sonia and Dani were both good in attack and defense. Rachel G and Mc G put a great shift in the center never stopping with both players box to box causing the opposition nigh tares. Leanne and Kelly looked dangerous with Kelly unlucky not to get her first goal and Amanda was a constant threat tru out.
All in all a promising display.
Back to the league this week.
We will need some of our players to return for the league game as one or 2 from Sunday are away. Please rob steal or beg but be there.
