On a wet spongey pitch the quarter final started between two good sides looking to play their football. Rovers looked dangerous early on. Some quick incisive play, occasional slowed down by a country duck pond, allowed Rovers to exert pressure. This told with a number of dangerous early corners. Eventually Dec was found free in the box to head Rovers into a deserved lead. Throughout the whole game Urmston played the ball out from the defence. With time their extra man in midfield told and they began to have an increasing amount of possession without ever really troubling our stand in keeper. Rovers were still able to get forward on a number of occasions but the final ball never quite came off. Nathan had a couple of long-range efforts. There was also great work down the left by Fraser and Bills. Tad found himself through on goal but politely passed the ball back to the opposition keeper. At the other end Urmston came closest from a cross that threatened to curl over Owen who, with the help of the Rovers defence managed to clear the ball away.
At half-time we knew there were encouraging signs throughout but we needed to build on the lead.
Again Urmston looked comfortable passing the ball around the pitch but mostly this was between the back four and midfield. This was largely due to a great display from our back four. Ross dealt with everything in the air. Dec chased everything down. Stu and Mike completed the defensive unit. Owen again was largely untroubled for long-periods. This summed up with the clean sheet at the end of the game. Going forwards, Rovers looked threatening but the play lacked sharpness, too many sloppy passes. Harris entered the fray his great display immediately brought rash challenges from the opposition not dealt with at all by today referee who offered no protection. As the game became more stretched Harris hit the bar with a neat first time effort from the corner of the box and Dee hit the bar from a close range header. Rovers sought the decisive blow and this eventually was provided from Steve Fraser. Fraser clearly had enough of his team-mates firing blank, decided to ignore them and went on a marauding run past a 3, 4, 5 and who knows maybe 6 defenders to smash home for 2-0. Urmston kept pushing to the final whistle. Their best chance came when a bit of luck found their man free, 8 yards out only to blaze over. Finally a well struck free-kick looked to have finally beaten the stubborn defence only to clip the post. Sky sources report that Owen had it covered. Also great to see Alex back. Excellent first game back, provided composure and influence in the middle of the park and should be a great boost to the squad for the rest of the season.
From last week’s display which should leave everyone pretty embarassed with G saying was the worst he had seen from a Rovers team, there was a step in the right direction. There was an improvement in the first half which we built on in the second. We all need to be at training Thursday so we can step it up again next week.
PLEASE NOTE: Next 2 weeks we play Manchester Knights. Knights have signed 7 players from Manchester Athletic which means they're a different proposition and are by no means a side that will be bottom of the table at the end of the season.
Goals: Dec, Fraser
Seasons Goals:
8 Bills,
4 Masterman,
