Manchester City 12-1 Manchester Rovers Ladies, 13.1.13
Amanda – GK (Sam, 80 mins)
Sonia – LB
Alison F – CB
Cris – Sweeper (Capt)
Alison McG – CB
Dani – RB (Kelly, 70 mins)
Nic – RM (Newman, 20 mins)
Rachel G – CM
Rachel M – CM
Chloe – LM
Lena – CF
The first fixture of 2013 was not kind to Rovers as they faced a young Manchester City side who are top of the league, on a fast 3G surface due to inclement January weather leaving most pitches in the area unplayable.
City are already a very good side and should really be playing at a higher level. They enjoyed most of the possession early on and took the lead through a header from a corner, they added to their tally in twenty or so first half minutes to give Rovers a mountain to climb after the break. After losing Nic to another unfortunate ankle injury, Newman made her return to the side. Following another City corner she broke from defence, lofted a ball over the top to Lena who left the City defenders for dead, round the goalkeeper and slotted the ball home from a tight angle. That was Rovers' first goal against a City side in three attempts.
Rovers performed better in the second half and closed City’s players down quicker to break up any build up play. However the game ended 12-1 and as Graham said before kickoff, Sunday was a good chance for the players to build on their match fitness following the Christmas break. Rovers now have two blank weekends before a winnable game against Curzon Ashton who are one place above them in the table.
Players’ player of the match – Newman. A strong return from injury for Newman who helped the defence to stay organised and provided the assist for Lena’s goal. Well played Newman.
