This was effectively a top of the table clash. From the start of the game watching the not so saintly Kents you had to wonder how they were top of the table. It was a fairly bitty opening with both sides not having played each other yet. The main dangers came from freekicks conceded around the box. Much to the delight of Rovers Masterman got a special gift wrapped freekick out of his locker to give us the lead. Soon after Ross put the ball out for a throw and for some unknown reason a spectator from St Kents hit him to the ground. The guy was sent from the sideline. The game nearly abandoned. Why bother turning up on a Sunday morning to do that? The guy didn’t actually leave the match and continued to watch and shout instructions from the corner flag on the Rovers side of the pitch. To be fair the Ref couldn’t have done much more.
Soon after the disruption which disturbed the flow of the game Kents were lucky to draw level. However Rovers rallied and Masterman pulled a second rabbit out of his hat with a neat curling effort from the corner of the box, 2-1. With Rovers in the ascendency there came a great team move. Masterman again the architect crossing for Nathan to put us 3-1 up. How did you ever become a full-back? Played like Zidane today. Nathan also went close with a great solo counter attack from the half-way line. Shortly before the break Kents pulled a goal back. This was a good time for them to score and despite a dominant Rovers display, 2 sloppy goals had given Kents belief.
It was clear as soon as we were 1-0 and 3-1 up that Kents knew we were the better team so they’d have to play a physical game. G asked us to meet this challenge in the second half.
The away sides’ momentum carried over to the second period with Kents going 4-3 up. It was nearly 5-3 before Masterman headed clear off the line. In the mean time they picked up a number of bookings, at least of couple of which should have been red. Rovers were applying pressure and beginning to impose themselves on proceedings again. A clearance saw their forward tangle with Stu. Stu got headbutted ( a bit like www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYAGfcJQBJI) but Stu was a man and didn't fall to the ground and finally Kents were down to 10. Rovers were then camped in the penalty box, after going close a couple of times Damo headed us back level with 2 minutes to play.
A minutes silence was observed today following the passing of Bills Dad. Impeccably observed by both sides. G asked us to get a result for our captain. The spirit and determination was obvious to everyone on the sideline, topped off with rescuing a deserved point in the last minute.
