Cheshire & Manchester Sunday League – Division 1
Manchester Rovers 4-2 The Urmston
1. Riccardo
2. Mason
4. Dec
7. Bills (C)
8. Damo
11. Harris
14. Mo
16. Masterman
17. Tad
23. Fraser
27. Owen
Rolling Subs:
6. Wainman
15. Cotter
25. Nathan
The match started fast and furious with the ball skidding along the surface. It was mostly open and end to end. Urmston threatened through long balls and had a number of chances to score. Mo, Dec and Ricky all played their part in making it difficult. Dec cleared one effort last ditch off the line. Ricky made one on one saves. At the other Rovers struggled to string passes together. The ball mostly ended up sliding through to the opposition keeper. This meant the introduction of Nathan midway through the half and the game soon changed. Owen won the ball and played in Bills for 1-0. Soon after Nathan had the ball in the box and was tripped for a stone wall penalty, Bills converted, 2-0.
At half-time we knew we were lucky with the scoreline. G asked us to actually turn up for the second half and that we did.
Soon after the break there were chances to put real daylight between the teams: Tad, Bills and Nathan all going close and should have probably done better. Against the run of play Urmston pulled one back, a diagonal ball into the box caught out the defence allowing the opposition to half the deficit. If nothing else this spurned us on and it was now we started to play some excellent football. All the midfield and forwards started to link up well. A Stew Mason freekick was clipped into the box allowing Nathan to score a thoroughly deserved goal with a header at the back post. Soon after Nathan turned provider. A neat turn and swivel before a cross for Damo to nod the ball home at the back post, 4-1. The next goal was even better with the whole team linking up, to finish off, Bills crossed for Nathans header, it should have been 5-1 but for a poor offside decision. Late on after the part-timers were substituted with cramp and the team had made a lot of changes Urmston pulled one back. Remembering the goal difference scenario last season and the current league table this is something we need to cut out.
G mentioned the home matches after the game. If you see the league table results went our way today. However we’ve ground to make up having played fewer games. The day we turn up thinking the three points are ours is the day of an embarrassing scoreline (see Wanderers 2-7 Levenshulme).
Ref Watch
There’s always at least one in every team we play, their 16 put in a two footed lunge from behind Bills in the first half. In the second he nearly broke my leg. I had the ice pack on this evening but all the peas melted. The only reason I’ve time to do the report is that the peas are currently being refrozen. To be fair to the ref generally had a solid game.
Goals: Bills 2, Nathan, Damo
Seasons Goals: 7 Bills, 3 Mo, Tad, 2 Brandon, Damo, 1 Ross, Harris, Masterman, Dec, Fraser, Nathan
