At this stage last season Rovers lost an epic match 8-5aet against the eventual county cup runners-up Langley Rangers. Along with a 1-0 victory against the same opposition in pre-season this should give Rovers the belief they can make a real impact in this tough competition. Today’s opponents were Withington Victoria. Despite them being in the 3rd tier of their league they came into this game high on confidence on the back of 5 straight league wins.
We were reminded of the need to make a quick start today. However our early pressure won us a corner only for Withington to clear their lines and hit us on the break. A missed interception saw the Withington striker clear. Riccy was quick off his line but his clearance hit the oncoming striker and flew into the empty goal. A lucky break. Not for the first time this season Rovers weren’t fazed by going behind and continued as they had started. We were looking dangerous and were soon level. Dec’s through ball from centre-half found Bills who beat the keeper and neatly finished from a tight angle, 1-1. Rovers were looking dangerous from crosses. Next a dummy from Fraser found Tad who laid off Bills to curl in a cross to the far post. With the green jerseys queuing up Dec’s diving header across the keeper found the corner, 2-1. For the third, an excellent team move found Bills free on the right of the box, his cross found Tad, 3-1. Rovers threatened to finish the game before half-time. Bills and Tad provided one another with chances. Harris also rattled the crossbar with a long-range shot.
The second-half saw Rovers come out of the traps. First Tad, Mo and Bills linked up to put Tad clear down the right however his cross was blocked. Next Tad’s cross found Fraser whose header was saved. It looked like one way traffic. Rovers weren’t able to capitalise and for the rest of the half Withington played good football. Riccy was forced to pull off an excellent save early on. For the most part Rovers did a good job of containing the opposition. With the introduction of all the substitutes Rovers again took more control and soon put the game beyond doubt. Dennis held the ball up well for Garry to play in Ian down the right. He whipped in an excellent cross to Fraser who provided an equally pinpoint and unstoppable finish.
A good result today. Next week a tough away league fixture against The Urmston. We went to their ground during last season’s pre-season for a genuinely entertaining 0-0 draw. It promises to be another tough match, especially as their scouts were taking notes on us today.
