There was a need for a reaction today and Rovers provided it. The first half started well with Rovers playing some excellent football. The chances soon came. After a couple of shots from distance, a free kick swung in by Bills found Ross at the far post. Cows backside, banjo. However Rovers continued to look dangerous and soon after the ball came in from the right and Mo found Bills who tucked his shot away, advantage Rovers. Next, Riccy assisted with a long clearance that saw Bills rob the keeper and stroll the ball into the empty net. An example of making your own luck and a deserved two goal advantage. Apart from in patches there wasn’t much football played the rest of the half. Riccy was called into action once after a simple ball over the top, a great save that kept the advantage. The game was stop start with a number of fouls and arguments. When Ross pulled down their striker who was nearly clean through he was sent to the floor by a shoulder charge in the head. Ross was cautioned but Hybrid were rightly down to 10 for violent conduct. Despite the advantage Hybrid did have a spell of pressure just before the break. A few free kicks and corners caused trouble, with Riccy once just tipping the ball away from a dangerous cross.
At half-time we spoke of the need to put in an equally disciplined performance in the second half. We knew Hybrid had the players to cause us problems or make something out of nothing.
After the break Rovers were at times happy to let Hybrid keep the ball at the back. However with discipline throughout the Rovers team, Hybrid only really threatened from long balls, the vast majority of which were easily dealt with. Riccy was only called into action once from a long shot. This summed up a fine display today from the defence. Another rounded display from Dec, thought he should have scored. If Lother can do it, why not Dec? www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJ6a93NKxnQ
Ross had a top game. In the second half he made a number a great blocks, tackles and interceptions despite walking a tight rope. Stuart was excellent keeping quiet one of the best players in the league and the player who caused so many problems for us last season. Masterman made it look like there was no left winger for the opposition. Dee won about every tackle and interception going.
At the other end Rovers created the real chances. Bills came closest with an effort at the near post, also a header just over the bar. There were also chances for Masterman and Mo, including some excellent build up play. Despite not capitalising on the man advantage or really putting Hybrid to the sword the result was never really in doubt with Rovers keeping a good measure of control of proceedings.
Just a quick comment on the ref today. Possibly the best we’ve had this season. We were subject to several reckless challenges and committed only one or two, the key difference being we were never out to deliberately injure anyone. The ref didn’t get every decision right but he got the key decisions right and wasn’t afraid to show cards which just about kept a lid on a very heated match.
Goals: Bills 2
Seasons Goals: Bills 4, Mo 3, Tad 2, Brandon 2, Ross 1, Damo 1, Harris 1, Masterman 1
