Rovers continued to pick up points on their travels high up on the Oldham hills, on a wet and windy afternoon on a 3G surface. It didn’t take them long to get off the mark, Jess looking lively on the right wing and scoring two identikit goals in the early stages. In the first half Rovers looked solid at the back with Cris organising the line well and Sonia, Alison F and Kath affording the Heyside attackers little space or time on the ball. Rovers went three up after Rachel G outmuscled the left-back and crossed into the box, the centre-half and goalkeeper got in each other’s way and Chloe took advantage to poke home the loose ball.
At half-time Graham told the players to keep the passing simple and take advantage of a pitch absent of any nasty bobbles. Rachel M came on and made it 4-0 with a poacher’s goal after a mix-up in the Heyside defence. At this point Rovers might have thought they were cruising but Heyside hit back with three long range efforts, Rovers admitting at the end that the rolling substitutions disrupted the flow of their play, and possibly their concentration. Rachel M went onto complete a second half hat-trick and Rachel G hit the bar with a free-kick; in the end Rovers came away with the points and despite conceding four second half goals, deserved the win.
Players’ player of the match – Jess. Two early goals set Rovers on their way to victory and Jess was involved in much of the attacking play throughout. Well played Jess.
