For the first time this season Rovers entered the match as favourites. The only side with a 100% record. Levenshulme’s mixed record epotomised the mixed results so far in the league. They’d suffered 2 defeats but entered the game on the back of a 4-0 victory. For the first time this season Rovers started the brighter. Bills corner taking was solid throughout and this led to an early goal from Damo. See the link for a rough idea of a mirror image of what happened www.youtube.com/watch?v=TiTQHnxN41g. For the first quarter Rovers had dominated and perhaps should have extended their advantage. We had a clear penalty shout turned down as well after the ball clearly struck the defenders arm from his own clearance.
The half then turned towards Levenshulme and Rovers seemed to be sitting too deep in their own half for long periods. Despite sustained territory and the ball flashing agonizingly across our six yard box with Riccy’s fingertips doing just enough, Rovers got through to half-time one nil up.
If you need to make a point its best done with fruit and so Grahams teamtalk focussed on how deep in our own half two bananas were placed. From where Damo was stood he said he could only see one banana and was focussing on where the other one could be, but eyewitnesses and the bananas owner Dave Harris can confirm there were definitely two bananas lying together.
The lads emerged for an inspired second half display. This was a day things didn’t all go our way. Levenshulme quickly pulled level after Riccardo brought down their forward for a spot-kick. The ball went out of play as the opposition forward theatrically tripped over Riccardo. Nevertheless the ref made up his mind and Levenshulme pulled level. For a time it was all hands to the pump as the ball was cleared off our line several times. Once by Fraser after a fine save from Riccy tipped an effort onto the bar. It was frantic stuff but the determination in the team was there for all to see. A bit like www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rc1tBklTMqw.
This week it was hats off to Jonesy doing a great job for the team making his first start on the wing since 2000. With 20mins to play Harris entered the fray and made a devastating impact. First he provided the touch, composure and fresh legs to get Rovers up the pitch. After the ball fell to him on the left side of the box he showed great technique to volley home to put Rovers in front. The lift and relief in the team was clear. Next Dec made a marauding run forward, playing a neat one-two with Owen, Dec continued on and slid a great through ball to Brandon to double the lead. In two minutes Rovers were 3-1 up and Levenshulme looked totally shocked. Their frustration was shown by a reckless tackle on Harris who then made way after helping us turn the game on its head. In the final minutes Rovers hadn’t heeded the warning of the last two weeks and offered Levenshulme a glimmer of hope. A fine curling effort from the edge of the box made it 3-2.
We were just about comfortable in the end. We’d come from behind twice this season and held on at 1-1 today. Great determination and great football at times. Lads we’ve got to keep this up and get better, from now on every team knows they’re in for a tough game against us and they’ll all be out to beat us to try to end the 100% start.
