Rovers came into this match on the back of a bad defeat and a point to prove. Having uncharacteristically shipped goals during the start of the season all eyes were on whether the defence cut stay tight and whether the attack could maintain it's freescoring start. Early on and Rovers were solid defensively and looked dangerous going forwards. In fact Rovers cut The Quays open time and time again only for the final ball to be misplaced or the finish to miss the target. One superb clearance off the Rovers line also maintained a clean sheet.
Rovers were asked to win the second half but were increasingly frustrated. Time and again Rovers looked like they would finally take a more than deserved lead and time and again the final ball or finish let them down. With the introduction of fresh legs and new personal it looked like Rovers would finally take the lead but unbelievably it was time and again the same story. In the 80th minute it began to look like the breakthrough would never come when a long ball upfield by Simon bounced into the Quays box, surrounded by two tall defenders Bills leapt upwards like a young salmon and beat them both to the header and the ball trickled over the line with the keeper stranded. Bizarelly Rovers reverted back to type in the final ten minutes with at least three more glorious chances spurned.
In the end a 1-0 win and three points, great character for sticking at the task in hand and never letting our heads drop ... how this didn't end with a cricket score in Rovers favour we'll never know.
