The long and winding road … 3-2 vs St Kents (last minute goal and survived with our lives), 2-1 vs DS (and Lowry nearly broke his leg whle Stu was nearly chopped in two and all after Riccy’s bicycle kick clearance off the inside of the post), 2-1 vs Burnage (Khash with a last minute goal) … to the cup final had dramatic events and goals throughout. On the day Rovers had to forget everything that had gone before and win the day against a team on a twelve game unbeaten run.
With the teams out and ready to go Rovers were up against a proper football team and well a run football club in Motown FC. The early stages saw intensity from both teams, Rovers soaked up some early territory from Motown whilst always looking dangerous at the other end. On ten minutes came a big hit as Nathan and their left winger clashed heads. Both required extensive treatment, Nathan ended up in Whythenshawe Hospital and joined us for a pint sporting no less than eight stiches … legend. Inspired by Nathan’s example Rovers took their performance up a level and never looked back.
On 16 minutes a Rovers freekick was swung to the back post by Tad, Dec was the fox in the box whose header took Rovers into the lead. Throughout Rovers always looked dangerous from corners and balls into the box, Mo’s header in the middle of the box went straight at the keeper. Another attack saw Mo clean through on goal only for the ref to pull the game back for an injury to a Motown player. Mo almost had his chance soon afterwards when his battling in the box looked to have paid off only for him to be forced just too wide and his shot on the stretch hit the side netting. Just before half-time a Motown corner saw Dec win the header, the ball bounced up onto Tad’s hand after a miss clearance; the ref gave Motown a very harsh penalty. Their striker Leigh stepped up and coolly slotted home to level the scores.
At half-time we knew the game was there for the taking if we grabbed it with both hands.
Although Motown occasionally ventured forwards in both halves their long balls were dealt with comfortably by Jones and Dec, Any White was quickest to everything at left back and Stu Mason kept their danger man on the left quiet throughout; if ever the backline was breached Lewis made some great saves and showed great hands in a superb goalkeeping performance. The midfield battle was a similar story with Lowry and Miguel gradually taking more and more control of proceedings, Mo always looking dangerous when bursting forward from the midfield. There was hard work throughout by Tad and Manu on the wings and following Nathan’s example Gilly linked up the play well and battled tirelessly following Nathan’s self-less example in the early stages.
A corner on 67 minutes went straight across the six yard box, it was partially cleared until Gilly received the ball to feet with his back to goal, he swivelled and smashed the ball into the top corner. A stunning strike that would prove to be decisive.
With 15 minutes remaining a freekick from 40 yards was put into the box by Tad. Pretty sure it bounced precisely on the spot where the penalty was given in the first half, captain karma stepped up and the ball bounced straight through to the keeper who fumbled the ball into the goal. Cue celebrations as Rovers took what was now an unassailable lead. There was still time for more drama as a Motown player received a second yellow card for dissent. Anto came on and finished the job at right back, Khash brought fresh vigour to the midfield as Andy sprayed the ball to the left and right as Rovers threatened to extend their lead to the end of the game with Bills providing some excellent link up play.
Then came the final whistle, celebrations after a hard fought match, in true Rovers tradition the celebrations started in Whythenshawe Town’s clubhouse, continued on the coach to Fallowfield, into the Friendship and into the small hours with Rovers having claimed a fourth trophy in four seasons … CHAMPIONAIS!!!!
