Today Manchester Rovers turned up, went on the pitch and won a football match. Whichever 11 were on the pitch that 11 took personal responsibility, won their personal battles and this ensured a dominant team performance. From the kick off Rovers pinned Rusholme back and started creating chances. It wasn’t long before:
Goal!!! 1-0 A ball through the middle saw Gilly challenge in the air, the ball went through the opposition defence and everyone seemed to stop … except Manu who went clean through, one on one, rounded the keeper and slotted home.
Rovers continued to dominate, the talented Rusholme players tried to play their football but were constantly under pressure from a green shirt.
Goal!!! 2-0 After a Rovers corner was cleared, great covering by Lowry won the loose ball, a one two with Tad set Lowry down the left. Great work between him, Mo and Gilly saw the ball break to Manu in the box, a side foot finish found the bottom corner.
At half-time we knew the job was only half done.
With the introduction of freezing temperatures and sleet there was no change to the pattern of the game. Rovers continued to attack, Lowry’s shot was palmed wide for a corner. A pinpoint Lowry freekick found Jonesy whose bullet shot would have gone in if it had gone anywhere else but direct at the keeper. Soon after the keeper fumbled on the edge of the area, the ball broke to Tad who sized up the open goal and his first time shot went just wide having been under pressure from a phantom defender.
Goal!!! 3-0 Tad’s freekick from the right flashed across the box only to be tipped wide for a corner. The resulting inswinger from the left was whipped straight onto the goalkeeper and went straight in.
Goal!!! 4-0 In almost an action replay of the previous match Manu beat a couple of players for fun down the left, had the keeper and players on the line to beat with Gilly square, Manu again chose to shoot only for the keeper desperately palm the ball out. Goalline technology [Referee, 35 yards out?!] said goal to complete a superb hattrick for Manu. Eyewitness accounts [Gilly] confirmed the ball crossed the line.
Rovers could have had more goals. It’s easy to forget every player continued to win their own battles and Rusholme, clearly a talented side did give Rovers a real test today, had they been allowed to play a repeat of the away fixture in November was on the cards. The quality of the opposition was confirmed when Rusholme finally did break though and a deft chip from the edge of the box gave Riccy no chance Goal! 4-1. There was still time for more from Rovers, the long awaited return of Bills came in the last 15 minutes and the returning goal machine came close to scoring in the final minutes.
Goal!!! 5-1 Manu had dominated the opposition defence and helped drive Rovers to a comfortable lead. He now turned provider as his cross from the right found Gilly at the back post who coolly slotted home for a deserved goal.
Only an equally good display will give Rovers a fighting chance against DS in the Cup Quarter Final next week.
