Having asked Rovers to kick-off half an hour early St Kents decided to turn up half an hour late. Given near freezing conditions this only meant Rovers were well and truly warmed up by kick-off. Rovers played against the wind in the first half and early on pinned Kents in their own half. Kents had a quick striker and kept playing long diagonal balls into the wind that were tough to deal with. Their striker was played through one on one and was only denied by a superb stop by Riccy who was quick off his line. Shortly afterwards Kents were in again, their forward broke into the box and forced an excellent one handed save from Riccy before Declan cleared to safety.
Overall Rovers had the better of the play, Fraser in particular made inroads down both flanks. One lightning counter attack from Rovers saw Gilly play in Nathan who ran 40 yards and beat the keeper only for the shot to drift just wide. Another attack down the right saw Anto cut inside and curl a spectacular effort inside the post for GOAL!!! 1-0 and a deserved lead. Throughout the half Rovers were hit by the usual barrage of hard tackles and kicks we know to expect from Kents. Dec was hit hard in a 50/50 that nearly ended his game, a similar tackle saw a red card on MOTD the night before; excessive force/high/wild, no punishment for Kents. Rovers defence and central midfielders battled bravely and won plenty of 50/50s; clearly inspired by Dec and Jonesy at centre-half. On the stroke of half-time Tad played in Fraser both the left, Fraser cut inside but could only find the keeper with his shot. Rovers could easily have extended the advantage before the break with greater composure and better decision making in the final third, several guilty players, but at half-time it was one nil.
Graham asked us to keep battling and win the second half.
Rovers now had the wind in their sails for the second half and were pressing hard to extend their advantage. A good move at the start of the half saw Gilly and Nathan link up with Nathan’s shot blazing just wide. It was Kents who struck back, a rare attack saw a ball played in behind the defence, a good finish left Riccy no chance GOAL! 1-1. Tad whipped in a corner from the left that was just deflected wide. Stuart whipped in the resulting corner from the right and Jones header smashed into the GOAL!!! 2-1. However Kents struck back again, one ball in behind saw their left back drive an effort into the far corner just passed Riccy’s fingertips, GOAL! great finish 2-2. Rovers had Kents in their own half for the entire half bar these two chances. Gilly came closest to scoring when his shot came back off the post.
A substitution for Kents saw their number 12 kick out at Nathan who was on the ground a metre from the referee, somehow the referee let it go, said HE DIDN’T SEE IT; rules dictate violent conduct and a red card. Rovers broke through at least half a dozen times only to be called offside, even when attackers were literally stood behind defenders when the ball was played. On one occasion Fraser was played in with the right back playing him on, he was called offside and his shot went just wide. The keeper took exception to having to go and get the ball, walked 30 yards to Fraser on our left wing and grabbed Fraser by the throat; ref said HE DIDN’T SEE IT. Both Fraser and the keeper got a yellow card. It looked like extra-time as Rovers couldn’t convert possession and territory into chances. A late corner from Tad swung-in, wind assisted, straight into the GOAL!!! 3-2. Though the Kents keeper proceeded to stamp on Dec, whose crime had been trying to head the ball into the goal (ref said HE DIDN’T SEE IT).
Epilogue
After the match we went to shake hands, it was all going brilliantly until Fraser stuck out his hand to shake their keepers hand, all he got in return was a full blooded headbutt. A rovers player managed to push their keeper off Fraser. Their manager/coach/fan/assistant (veteran of several previous reports including poking Ross in the eye, kicking Dec and slapping Anto) then ran over to us shouting threats but was pulled off by some of the Kents squad. Not sure whether the ref saw any of it.
Goals: Anto, Jones, Tad
Players Player: Jonesy
Stood up for Rovers today and gave a big big performance. Was hard but fair in his tackles and gave everyone belief we would survive the match and win as well.
Seasons Goals:
7 Manu,
6 Fraser, Nathan,
3 Mason, Jones,
2 Ross, George, Owen, Miguel, Tad,
1 Gilly, Alex, Rob, Dec, Pricey, Lowry, Alex, Anto
