Rovers season finally got underway against league new boys Moorfield. Rovers hit the ground running, played their football and regularly got at the Moorfield backline. The first 35 minutes saw Rovers stretching the opposition defence and regularly getting in behind. All that was lacking was the final delivery that would have seen a comfortable lead established.
Yet another attack saw Bills hold the ball up and spread it to the right where Tad was tripped on the right side of the goal just outside the 18 yard box. Step up freekick specialist Stuart who curled in an unstoppable effort to give Rovers their first goal of the season with some relief that we had made our advantage count. Stuart was so confident he’d scored “as soon as it left my foot” that he’d “already turned to run to the halfway line” because “only a world class save would have stopped it”.
Moorfield did threaten from time to time and had forced a couple of good saves from Riccy.
At half-time we were asked for more of the same with more goals.
The second half saw Rovers attack with even more momentum. However it took a long time before the game was safe. Chances went begging now that the final ball had improved. Riccy again made a couple of neat saves on the rare occasions that Ross didn’t stop the Moorfield attacks before they’d started. Eventually Masterman found Tad who played Bills down the right, the cross into the corridor of uncertainty was tucked away by Nathan to double the advantage.
With time running out Mike’s cross come shot was saved. Mike’s corner was pinpoint to the back post where Ross’s bullet header sealed the win.
Next week we face Trafford Mersey in the pick of the first round matches of the Godfrey Wild Trophy which we won the season before last. A big head to head clash that will need Rovers to take the momentum from today and raise the performance a couple of extra notches.
