A big day in the Manchester and Cheshire Sunday League. Levenshulme went to AFA where a win would clinch the league. Rovers entertained a Caspian side who had barely turned up to play Levenshulme a couple of weeks earlier for fear of being injured before their cup final; and got beat 6-0.
Rovers started well, six seconds was at the forefront of everything we did. Rovers were looking the more likely early on. The game saw hard tackling throughout. A Rovers freekick saw pinpoint delivery from Masterman, Dave beat Jones to the ball at the back post to give Rovers the lead [goal!] 1-0. With Rovers a goal up their right back lost his head. Having abused the referee twice he did so a third time in front of his face [sending off]; there could be no arguments. Moments later Tad’s corner was headed home by Ross at the back post [goal!] 2-0. Rovers were comfortable but given the pace and skill of the opposition it was always a dangerous lead. Rovers sat back a little before the break allowing Caspian some pressure from corners.
The task was to win the second half, especially given Rovers has been poor against ten men this season.
The second half saw Rovers dominate. A stone wall penalty wasn’t given. Yousef should have scored but for a great save. A throw in from the right was dummied in the box by Yousef after Bills called. Bills swivelled and half volleyed expertly for [goal!] 3-0. Caspian had lost all discipline in the second half. Their centre mid punched Owen in the ribs off the ball. He then picked up Tad by the hair following the penalty appeal. Their defender scraped his studs down Bills hamstring. [sending off] Then moments later punched Nathan in the stomach in front of the referee. The referee sent off the centre midfielder by mistake, but he deserved to go. Bizarre way for Caspian to self-destruct given the ability they have in the team and the fact they had a cup final a week later.
[update] Quote G “Well, played today lads … especially because Levenshulme got beat 3-1!”
