[no ball] Denton forgot to pump up any of their balls, we used our training balls along with a replica 1970s casey fit for a beach
The pattern of the game saw Rovers trying to play football whilst Denton played long balls up to their striker.
The long-ball game alongside loss of balls into various gardens may the game stop start. Rovers struggled to find rhythm, play was rushed, the final ball poor.
About a dozen times we almost broke their offside trap. Literally each one was called offside. Unbelievably the ref didn’t give us the benefit of the doubt a single time.
Denton’s long ball game gave them a little joy. A few long throws caused us problems. The defence and Riccy dealt with them well.
At one point Jones gave the ball away. Dec covered behind the defence under pressure from their striker only to knock the ball past Riccy! With the ball trickling towards goal Jones had tracked back brilliantly and cleared to safety. Superb recovery epitomizing the spirit of the performance.
Nil nil at half-time and a poor game. Each Rovers player knew we had to take responsibility and take the points.
The start to the second half was better. We pressed Denton with greater urgency and got some joy.
[chance] Stuart Pearce’s cross from the left almost saw Nathan give us the lead.
[Goal] With Rovers on the attack Bills took away the defender to allow Mo to play Tad through on goal, the finish found the corner 1-0.
Rovers were threatening from crosses and chances, Nathan went close when played through, we weren’t able to double the lead. The ref continued to call virtually every through ball offside. One superb ball from Masterman to Bills, 4 yards onside, was called offside.
Denton continued to test the defence with their long ball game. The back four won almost every header. This frustrated Denton to long shots that Riccy dealt with well.
[update] We were kicked, wrestled and took dangerous tackles throughout. How they ended up with 11 players on the pitch is a mystery. The ref clearly saw Ross get kicked by their captain who should have walked. All the central midfielders did a superb job standing up to everything that was thrown at them while still managing to play some good football even if only for short spells.
We battled through and saw out a solid victory.
Players Player
Andy White
Was probably the only player constantly asking for the ball in the first half. Showed good composure going forward. Won everything in the air and gave a solid defensive display alongside the rest of the back four who alongside Riccy did superbly to keep a clean sheet.
Squad
A big thank you to all those who played a small part or didn't get on. It's the first time this has happened for a while. As g said he will make it up. Having squads like today has won us points this season, no doubt about it. Let's keep it going every game of the run in.
Ref Watch
3/10
How he didn’t give us the benefit of the doubt a single time when we sprung the offside trap is a mystery. Listened to pretty much all of their offside shouts and complaints in general. Didn’t deal with their violent conduct. How their captain stayed on the pitch is a mystery. This made it 12 vs 11 and sweetened the victory in the end.
