The biggest match of the season saw the top two go head to head. As was expected Levenshulme burst out of the traps to put Rovers under pressure. They played long balls or direct into a headwind that made life difficult for Rovers. The opening exchanges saw Rovers battling to keep Levenshulme at bay as happened 12 months ago. Rather than being broken down a defensive mix up saw Levenshulme pass into an open for 0-1. Soon afterwards another mix up saw their forward cross and the ball was headed home for 0-2. With nothing to lose Rovers finally started to make headway up the pitch. Jonesy was causing trouble in the air and Pricey looked like he could beat their entire back four alone. Riccy had to make an early exit after a foul by their forward who jumped into Riccy. Despite the reshuffle with Owen in goal soon enough cracks began to appear in the Levenshulme defence. A forward pass was intercepted by their centre half’s. They fell over each other, Pricey took the ball and slotted home. Disallowed for offside. Pricey may have been in an offside position from the through ball but surely once the defenders thingy their clearance up he should be entitled to retrieve the ball in a new phase of play? The next chance saw Pricey skin their defence down the left, he was clean through on goal, went round the keeper only to be fouled. He tried to stay on his feet and the ball ran away. This was a stone wall penalty and probably a red card. The final big chance of the half saw Dec head over from a corner though the ball was always just above him.
Half-time saw Rovers go back out with real belief they could turn the game around.
Levenshulme had some early territory but Rovers were increasingly threatening on the break. Tad was played through down the right and should have shot rather than listening to the call to square the ball, apologies lads. Rovers were increasingly pinning Levenshulme back, had a spate of corners but never really challenged the keeper. Levenshulme were trying to kill the game off on the break. Once again a superb display at the back and from Dee and Mo battling in midfield was keeping them quiet. Rovers went to all-out attack. The best chance saw Pricey take the ball off the keeper and square but with Levenshulme back in numbers the chance to shoot never came. With Rovers throwing everything forward the defence was exposed and Levenshulme forward sealed the victory 0-3.
Regarding the league we need the philosophy of a wounded animal for the remaining seven games. There’s nothing to lose and we have to come out fighting. The defence has been superb the last two weeks and in my opinion easily the strongest in the division. The attack haven’t been scoring enough goals, admittedly in the absence of key players including our two top scorers today. We need to come out fighting, back each other to the hilt, believe in ourselves and the quality is there for it to start raining goals again. Let’s have it lads!!!
