The match was a great game between two good footballing sides in glorious conditions. The sides went toe to toe in the first half with both sides having chances to take an early advantage.
Nevertheless it was nil all at half time.
Rovers started the second half well but the same pattern continued in the game. Athletic were comfortable in possession but couldn’t break us down. Rovers on the counter looked dangerous but the final ball and decision making was never quite right. A miscommunication allowed their striker to nip in between centre half and keeper for 0-1. However Rovers threw everything at Athletic and a glorious Bills corner was nodded home by Ross sending the match into extra time.
With both sides tiring in the baking heat it was always likely to be a mistake or a spark of magic that won the day. Rovers had also had to contend with injuries to Bills, Owen and Dee. With minutes to go a freekick from 25 yards flew inch perfect into the corner to put Athletic ahead. A bit of luck saw Athletic double their advantage as their forward shot into the turf only for the ball to loop up and bounce over Riccy for 1-3. Rovers went up the other end and from an indirect freekick almost had a glimmer of hope but the shot was saved and Athletic reached the final.
Though the forward play lacked a cutting edge, defensively Rovers were absolutely superb. One goal was conceded in 115 minutes and only a bit of magic made the difference.
