The was played with a cup intensity, end to end and open. The pitch was saturated from the start and would cut up badly as the game progressed. It was Caspian who struck first. A mistake at the back led to a 0-1. It wasn’t long before one square pass took out three of our midfield and one through ball took out our defensive for 0-2. To add to our troubles Riccy bravely dived into a 50/50 in the box. The ball was cleared but Riccy had to go off to be replaced by Gav. To complete a miserable first half Rovers failed to stop a cross from the right that flew over everyones heads and went straight into the top corner. At the other end despite a lot of the ball and a lot of good intention, it’s fair to say nothing came off and there were no real clear cut chances. Rovers deservedly trailed at the break.
Rovers were given new instructions for the second half, however the half started as the first had finished, 0-4. However to our credit there was no hint of letting our heads go down even at this stage. Owen burst into the box and was chopped down for a stone-wall penalty the ref inexplicably failed to award. However, we did finally breakthrough a superb curling effort from Nathan from 25 yards flew in to give Rovers hope, 1-4. Fraser then chased down the defence, he robbed the keeper and scored for 2-4. A super goal giving an example of determination that too few in Rovers green had equalled to this point. No sooner were we in with a chance than Caspian went down the other end to re-establish a three goal advantage. The goal summed up Rovers luck with three lucky bounces going Caspian’s way, 2-5. Soon after a long ball opened up a Rovers for 2-6. Bills struck back with a superb freekick 3-6 and got his second 4-6 and despite a late rally the mountain was too steep to climb.
