The first meeting between these two sides since the Division 1 Cup final last May. Rovers felt they had a point to prove. Both sides started slowly, Rovers were threatening whilst Wanderers started wining and pretty much kept that up for 90 minutes. Following some incisive play the first big chance saw Jones shot at full stretch sail over the bar. Following more good play from the midfield and forwards Jones soon made amends when his CROSS come shot sailed into the top corner. A bit of luck but on the balance of play fully deserved. Soon after Mo linked up with Pricey and Whitey on the left, he played in Bills who tucked away a fine effort into the far post. With Rovers having to defend Dec broke forward, carried on over the half way line, hesitated, then carried on. His one two with Bills set him one on one with the keeper. The effort looked goalbound but for an uneven clump of Hough End turf, the ball came back off the post and Dec smashed home after being the quickest to react. Wanderers changed shape and threw the kitchen sink at Rovers before half-time, some superb blocks from Ross, Dec, Riccy and Pricey preserved the clean sheet. On the counter Rovers always looked dangerous but it was 3-0 at half-time.
The instructions were to win the second half.
Wanderers threw everything at Rovers in the first 15 minutes with numerous corners and crosses. It was still Rovers who looked the more likely on the break. Rovers on top form would have got a few more goals though its hardly surprising we were a little scrappy following the break. One effort a little like Joneseys in the first half almost crept in the top corner but for a great save from Riccy. A superb interchange down the left saw Bills chip the ball over the centre half for Priceys volley to go agonizingly wide. Fresh legs entered on the hour mark and rejuvenated Rovers, chances for Bills, Manu and Big Nathan went begging. Wanderers did get some reward. A cross from the right was headed home after Rovers had given the ball away, 3-1. Rovers did get their reward, after Masterman crossed into the box Bills, Big Nathan, Manu, Bills, Big Nathan, Manu, Bills, Big Nathan, Manu, Big Nathan tucked home a scuffed shot into the bottom corner to seal the win.
A superb result considering both the opposition and that the game came straight after Christmas. Next week we need to be that bit sharper.
