A derby atmosphere surrounded today’s match. Both sides were out early and determined to win the day. The early exchanges saw AFA exert pressure in the Rovers half. However the first big chance fell to Rovers. The rest of the half followed a similar pattern. Rovers had to face several corners and long throws into the box. There was always a Rovers head or Riccy’s fist to clear the ball to safety. At the other end Rovers play never quite clicked early on. However there were encouraging signs that there was space in behind the defence. The breakthrough came during Rovers first big spell of pressure. A deep ball into the box was well controlled by Dee whose left footed cross/ shot went square across the goal for Mo to tap in the opener at the far post 1-0. AFA had the chance to pull level when Rovers gave the ball away. The right winger went through one on one and a great diving save from Riccy tipped the ball wide. The pattern of the game continued with AFA playing long balls, winning corners and taking long throws. Rovers however always looked dangerous in the final third and there was a cutting edge to our play.
At half-time we were reminded that we had only finished the warm up and the real battle was still to come. This message absolutely applies to the season as well with the Christmas half-time approaching.
Rovers didn’t stall in the second half, in fact they burst out of the traps. From the kick off the ball went from Jones to Whitey who played Pricey down the left. With a little trickery Pricey got to the byline, Tad took the defence to the near post and Bills unmarked by the penalty spot side footed home an inch perfect finish after Pricey’s cut back, 2-0. AFA almost went down the other end to pull a goal back. Throughout the second half they had two or three decent chances with Riccy pulling off a string of superb saves to preserve the clean sheet. Full credit goes to the backline as well, they were always dominant in the air and tackle. Anto and Whitey were always asking for the ball allowing us good possession. Again Rovers looked dangerous with more cutting edge in the final third. Owen and Dee provided a solid midfield display. One series of blocks and tackles led Owen to break through the defence. Bills took over and looked to finish the game but for a great last ditch tackle from the AFA defender. From a corner Jonesy also connected and his header smashed the crossbar, it’s probably still shaking. With time running out and AFA running out of ideas Masterman was pushed in the box for a penalty. He stepped up and converted decisively for 3-0. There was still time for AFA to spoil what had been a hard fought encounter. One bad tackle in midfield on Owen and foul and abusive language led to a straight red card. While leaving the pitch the offender spat in Owen’s face. To be fair to the ref he didn’t see it.
Full-time and a very big happy birthday from all the lads to Nathan!
A great result to wrap up the pre-Christmas matches in the league. After a Cup Quarter Final against Inter Didsbury next week, the real battle starts in the new year.

To say we felt hard done by in the reverse fixture is an understatement. However at least the league provided a strong no nonsense ref who did a good job of keeping a lid on proceedings and allowed the game to flow.
Seasons Goals:
11 Bills
10 Big Nathan
4 Pricey
3 Mo
2 Tad, Ste, Dee
1 Ross, Fraser, Dec, Macca, Owen, Manu, Ben, Masterman
