The first clash between these two sides since the Subsidiary Cup Final 2012. Rovers set out their stall and gave a performance that matched the performance on that historic day for the club when we won our first cup final. The early exchanges saw Rovers playing in the Valiant half. Valiant struggled to move beyond the centre circle with Rovers dominating in the tackle and aerial battle. Rovers attacks became increasingly threatening. Anto sent a number of freekicks forward, one great delivery found Dee at the back post who for once didn’t disappoint to put Rovers one up, 1-0. Valiant tried to rally but were increasingly frustrated at their lack of attacking threat. Following a through ball Nathan broke through on goal. It looked like he had let the chance pass when he paused and let the defence get back, however following a touch to the side the drilled right footed screamer found the bottom corner just past the fully stretched keeper, super finish, 2-0. On the left wing Ben had given the right back a torrid time all game, on one occasion he found himself in behind the defence and showed great composure to score with a Messiesque chipped finish.
3-0 at half-time and it could have been more but it was certainly one of the best halves you will see Rovers play. G asked us to win the second half. This was imperative not only for momentum but also because of the tight goal difference battle at the top of the table.
The second half began slowly for Rovers, not for the first time of late. The Burlington and AC Old Boys matches are two examples. Valiant managed to break into the box, with Dec trying to recover his tackle was penalized for being an improbable success. The penalty was converted and Rovers were shaken into action 3-1. Following a scrappy few minutes as Rovers re-established themselves the chances started to rain down on the team. The following goals may not be in the right order. Bills pressed the last defender whose clearance smashed off Bills hand, ball to hand, Bills went through one on one and produced a fine chip to increase the lead. Another Rovers attack saw Big Nathan chopped down down when through on goal. The ref had no option but to reduce Valiant to 10. A long ball from Riccy bounced over Pricey and Big Nathan went through on goal, his right footed shot beat the keeper. Another attack down the left saw a beauty of a cross from Whitey, the curler and height was perfect, it landed on Pricey’s head but angled header drifted just wide. Had to mention that because the cross was top quality. Anto produced an equally good ball from the other flank, this time it found Mo at the far post whose cool side footed volley found the net. At the other end a rare Valiant counter saw Nathan slide to block a cross or shot. The attacker fell over and ref awarded a penalty. It looked a penalty from some angles but in Nathan’s words, “I didn’t touch him”. Again the spot kick was converted. The was time for Big Nathan to show some twinkle toes in the box before being flattened for another spot kick. Big Nathan stepped up for his hattrick, the shot was parried at a comfortable height by the keeper but the sheer force of the hit saw the rebound fall to Big Nathan for his third goal.
Great win, a weak opposition, but full credit for the ruthlessness on display today.
