Before the game Jono underlined the importance of playing our football and not drag our selves down to our oppositions level and with a squad rotation this weekend Jono gave a chance to some of the fringe players to make an impact and to make shirts up for grabs for next week.
With no wind and a pitch that seemed to be in reasonable condition rovers were optimistic about claiming all 3 points today against a veteran looking Govans teams, and with the possibility of other results going in our favour 3 points today could mean us being back in the title race.
The game started off brightly as rovers took the lead with the very first chance as Craig whipped in a dangerous corner which left the Govans centre half no other choice but to punch the ball in his own net 1-0 and a great start just what rovers needed to take the edge off the game, with rovers taking the lead early on they started to really establish themselves keeping hold of possession and knocking it about nicely with only the odd scruffy pass giving it back to Govans, Craig looked really dangerous on the counter as his pace left the Govans defence with a real big problem as every through ball and ball over the top found it's way to Craig just down to shear persistence.
Chances came for rovers firstly when a delightful cross was put right across the box with Ben agonising close to a tap in at the back post another chance came with free kick out about 25 yards out was struck nicely by Liam G which looked to be flying but only for a great save from the Govans keeper, Govans had a few half chances when rovers struggled to get the ball out of their area but nothing clear cut as rovers defence and keeper did well to keep the lead.
As rovers grew into the game they began to enjoy themselves as some neat foot work from Andy M left the Govans full back on his arse on several occasions , but even with rovers being on tip for large periods of time the passing In the final third wasn't clinical enough to carve open any clear cut chances instead leaving Craig isolated with 4 defenders, but rovers were awarded some good fortune for their dominance as rovers corner failed to be cleared by the govan defence Liam G pounced on the ball and with a half volley looking to go harmlessly wide ended up striking a govan player and finding it's way into the net, a slice of fortune but none the less a well deserved goal for Liam G who had been brilliant up to this point.
With the lads coming in for half time there was a level of calm that felt very unnatural coming 2 goals to good against a team that didn't look like scoring but none the less Jono reflected back to previous games where our form in the first 15 mins of the second half had cost us a lot of points, Jono also pointed out the importance of goal difference for the lads to improve on their passing in the second half, and with the second half kicking off Govans looked the list hungry than they had for the whole game really getting in the faces of the rovers players and just like deja Vu found themselves back in the game with a goal as the striker broke forward and getting his shot off which found its way into the back of the net against a very dissapionted Gavin in net.
Jono felt this was the perfect opportunity to change the team about throwing on 3 subs all at once and changing the formation to a more attacking one and with the recent subs still trying to settle into the pace of the game Govans looked the more likely team to score as rovers were pinned back with some dangerous free kicks and corners that wasn't to be case as ben won a free kick on the edge of the area this was a great opportunity as Stephen stepped up to take the free kick he found the corner of the net wrong footing the keeper and restoring rovers 2 goal cushion.
The game was wrapped up 10 mid before full time when Robbie's brilliant cross found Ben unmarked in the box to tap home, 4-1 full time.
MOM - split one this week between Liam Wilson and Marc but Marc edging it with a team vote off, brilliant display from both of them and the rest of the lads.
