Another big game next week against Manchester Valiant. Valiant have had mixed results depending on the players who show up. You can be sure they think they owe us one for the 2012 Cup Final and they will be up for it!
Today we completed the double over Manchester Athletic. Athletic started well and had some possession however Rovers tried to press them high up the pitch. A couple of slips in their defence eventually led to Tad crossing from the right, Manu’s first time finish found the corner for 1-0. However Athletic hit straight back. A cross from the left wing was nodded home, the move was completed a little too easily for 1-1. A big kick by Gav up the pitch bounced over everyone and through to Tad who fluffed a glorious chance. Soon afterwards Nathan broke through on goal and slid the ball under the keeper for 2-1, great finish. There were more chances for Rovers, Dec burst forward but Tad’s cross was taken off Nathans head by the keeper. Owen burst through and tried a curler from 25 yards that crept just wide.
At 2-1 we were on top but it was a close game and still up for grabs.
The second half again saw Athletic keep the ball well without creating real chances. Long diagonal balls were dealt with well by the backline. Superb work rate and tackling from Dee kept breaking up their attacks. In contrast on our incisive breaks we always looked like we had a goal in us. However we were still struggling to put the game to beyond Athletic. Bills turned up straight from the airport to give the attack renewed impetus as did the others on the bench. The performance was characterised by resolute and disciplined defending. This was summed up by Dee and Gav clearing off the line and getting hurt in the process . Owen the fourth choice keeper had to take over in goal. When Rovers countered a foul on Ben allowed us to push forward. The freekick swung in with characteristic precision from Masterman, Lee squared back across goal and Bills swivelled and smashed home for 3-1. There were other chances, Owen won a great header forward to Tad who took a touch and swivelled a through ball to Bills, only an excellent save prevented a great goal. There was great energy to counter in the final minutes. The team discipline was summed up by Ben who tracked his man in the final minutes to head clear as last man after a deep cross.
Goals:
Manu, Big Nathan, Bills
Ref Watch
8/10 Didn't get every decision but once again did a good job.
Players Player
Tad
A case of first among equals today. It was difficult for anyone to vote for a stand out player. The whole team defended as a unit and I wouldn’t have won the vote if three players hadn’t have put the ball in the goal. Let’s keep it going next week.
Seasons Goals:
9 Bills,
7 Big Nathan
4 Pricey
2 Tad, Ste,
1 Ross, Fraser, Mo, Dec, Macca, Owen, Dee, Manu
