Rovers won the Subsidiary Cup following an epic encounter against high flying Manchester Valient in 2011/12. As we didn’t enter the competition last year, the defence of the trophy started 18 months on.
In near perfect conditions the match began in a scrappy fashion. Neither side managed to control possession and there was a battle to be won. After 20 minutes Rovers began to peg AC back. A corner was swung in by Bills and nodded home by Dee who opened his account for the season. At this stage Rovers gained confidence and almost full control of proceeding. More attacks came and went. Whitey played a pass down the left wing, the deftest of flicks from Tad found Bills who set up Pricey to double the lead. After more pressing of their backline, a mistake set Tad through one on one with 40 yards to goal. With the keeper on the edge of his box the chip towards goal beat the keeper but also the post. Before the halves end Tad chipped a through ball over their defence for Bills to slot home for 3-0.
The second half again began scrappily. A rare AC attack saw their player pull a hamstring and left AC down to 10 players. Rovers were the first team onto the pitches again today. On soft ground this just goes to show the importance of a good warm-up at this time of year. AC continued to attack however and soon enough a rare mistake at the back saw AC pull a goal back. Minutes later a long ball caught Rovers out and almost led to another goal, this time the shot was pulled wide. Rovers responded by taking better control of proceedings. The play wasn’t quite fluent but there were periods of superb football, re-cycling possession from right to left and opportunities down both flanks. The only thing lacking was the play being either much too quick or a little too slow in the final third. As the half wore on the improvement was clear and chances again fell to Rovers. Dave flicked one header just off the top of the crossbar, Manu shot from 30 yards, Manu burst down the right and fired a cross into the corridor of uncertainty only for the ball to skid off the wet surface and past Jonesy. A deserved victory.
This sets up a quarter final against Inter Didsbury. Next week a tough league encounter against Manchester Athletic against whom we scraped a 1-0 victory a few weeks back.
