After last weeks painful defeat to Stretfordians, Rovers looked to bounce back against cholts and do the double over their rivals, with the wind battering the players as they were putting up the nets the lads knew that the weather would have a major impact on the game, with a slight formation change the lads kicked off and started brightly passing the ball neatly cholts replied with lots of long balls which were either over hit for a goal kick or found its way in to the grateful arms of gav in net, without offering much of a reply rovers started to take control of the game but found themselves frustrated as they could not capitalise on their dominance with them unable to find the right pass in the final third, rick threatened the cholts defence on several occasions with his long throws and his dribbling in which he had the beating of the oppositions full back every time, as the second half wore on cholts began to push up the pitch but were soon halted by Liam Wilson who took up the role of holding midfielder and read the game perfectly often cutting out counter attacks and throwing big challenges in, with only a few minutes left in the half rovers held their breath as a rare mistake from Robbie gave the cholts striker a one on one chance against Gavin who performed a brilliant save to keep the game level this seemed to rejuvenate rovers and had them pushing up the pitch a lot more winning a couple of corners in the process with 2 minutes left of the half rovers were awarded a corner which was taken by rick his floated corner found tom in the middle who headed home for his first rovers goal and a deserved lead before half time.
2nd half
With the half time managers talk still ringing in the players ears rovers knew that cholts would come out all guns blazing for the start of the second half and rovers couldn't afford any slip ups like last week, as expected cholts came out for the second half at 100MPH and had a lot of chances in the opening period but rovers managed to stay strong at the back but cholts best chance of the game came when an over hit cross found it's was to a green shirt at the back post just on the edge of the are and with lots of time and space the cholts player should of done better as blazed his shot over the bar as it was starting to look like Déjà Vu from last week but that wasn't to be the case as Rovers were awarded a penalty after the cholts centre half came crashing through the back of Liam Gilbert recklessly and with no other choice the ref pointed to the spot Ste Molloy stepped up to take it and with last weeks miss still on his mind he stroked the ball into the bottom left hand corner normal service resumed and with the 2 -0 lead rovers felt the 3 points were there for the taking but the mood was soon changed as rovers lead was cut in half as the cholts striker robbed luke of the ball and drove at goal his neat outside of the foot finish left Gavin with no chance 2-1 and the nerves came flooding back for the lads but there 2 goal cushion was soon restored when Ste Molloy stepped up to take a free kick on the right hand side his in swinging corner was whipped in dangerously and found its way into the back of the net despite the defenders effort on the line 3-1 and with the game still going in rovers favour chances came but sadly went begging as the wind knocked a few of the front lads off and with 3-1 feeling like a bit of an injustice things got worse as a hopeful cross was headed in by our own Centre half Marc really bad luck for the big man who up to this point had a really solid game, 3-2 and it was game on as cholts pushed for an equaliser but again found themselves 2 goals behind as Ste Molloys blocked shot found it's way to lee Harris who made no mistake and smashed it home for rovers 4-2 and surely game over right?? But with 7 minutes to go cholts ensured that there would be a nervy end to the game as a neat 1 2 in the box left the cholt striker with only gav to beat and that he did as his shot flew in on gavs near post 4-3 rovers remained calm and solid for the last few minutes of the game an attribute the lads have missed the last few weeks and even with a very late chance which was fire tamely at gav rovers hung on for 3 points and well deserved as well.
MOM - for me it has to be Liam Wilson absolutely fantastic cleaned up in midfield time and time again, we have our very own Nigel de Jong
