A much changed line-up against an in form team and unknown quantity from across Manchester. The early exchanges were fairly even with Monton perhaps just edging proceeding. For the most part a solid defensive display stopped any clear chances being created. As the half wore on Rovers being to get a hold of the game. On the half hour mark the pressure told. A break from midfield by Ste allowed him to set Big Nathan through on goal. Quick control with his left foot and neat finish bang into the corner saw Rovers take what was just about a deserved lead. This was an impressive performance for Rovers considering the changes to the squad. A superb message to those who were away that every position has plenty of competition.
The second half saw Rovers play with the wind behind them. This had hampered Monton in the first half as many of their balls ran through to Riccy or straight out of play. With the ball now holding up in the wind Monton start to create chances, the first saw Riccy make a superb point blank save to keep Rovers in front. Riccy’s second save followed not too long after. However at the other end George was proving dangerous. His first run onto a through ball went just over. The second came from sheer persistence. After hassling their defence the ball bounced through and the shot went just wide, it was always going to be tough to re-balance after sprinting 60 yards. At the other end with Monton still in the game the pressure began to mount. Riccy made a couple more good saves. The best of the lot saw an aerial dive to the left but not only was the ball kept out put also pushed far towards the touchline and safety. Unfortuately Monton did find the equaliser to square the match at 1-1. In the remaining time they went for the winner and forced at least a couple more good stops from Riccardo. There was also some great defending and interceptions from Gav and Dec. The final whistle blew and penalties followed.
Rovers went second and were always playing catch-up, especially after we fell behind. However:
After Four Pens: 2-3
Monton could have won it but the pen came back out off the underside of the bar. Riccy equalized and took it to sudden death.
By Rovers 7th Pen: 4-4
Next Monton missed their 7th penalty, we had the chance to go through but the pen came back off the underside of the bar from virtually exactly the same spot at Montons fifth!!!
By 10th Pen: 6-6
Monton scored to lead 6-7. Finally and one before we had to go around again we missed our 10th and Monton progressed.
Fairplay to Monton. A good performance in a good football encounter and we can wish them the best in the next round. For Rovers despite the eventual loss this was a quality team display. It’s never easy with a lot of people playing in different position plus reshuffles after injuries during the game but Rovers came close to a 1-0 victory today. For all the lads who stepped up for the shootout half the battle is stepping up to take the penalty. As G always says, ultimately it’s a lottery so be ready to step up again and if you missed to put it away next time.
