Start with a BIG CONGRATULATIONS to Ross and Lucy on the birth of their daughter Elizabeth!!!
A return to the league today and also a match-up against last years’ cup final opponents The Urmston. The match started with Rovers playing against the wind. The Urmston threatened with long-balls that generally ran through to Ricky or were dealt with by the defence. At the other end great pressing from Manu and Nathan early on pinned Urmston back and put them under pressure. A through ball from Tad sent Manu on goal forcing a great save from the keeper. A cross from the right found Manu at the back post and another great save. The third big chance of the half saw Bills through on goal but the ball came back off on the post. Manu looked dangerous throughout. After moving to the left after an injury to Ben he was attracting a number of defenders to deal with him but Rovers couldn’t quite spread the play to take advantage of space elsewhere.
No goals at half-time was a slight worry given we’d had clear chances. The second half with the wind in our sails would see that change.
As soon as the half began Rovers broke with great football. Bills pulled out right and his cross was meant by Tad who could only find the keeper. Another good move saw Bills chopped down in the box for a stone wall penalty. This week there was no disappointment and a deserved 1-0 lead. However after a long pause for treatment to the Urmston centre half Rovers let down their guard. A ball down the Urmston right was crossed in, just over Decs head, a great finish into the corner followed, 1-1. A shock to the system but this galvanised us. Soon after Mo broke down the right, his cross was met with a great back-heeled finish from Nathan to restore the advantage. The next attack down the left saw Nathan break into the box and unselfishly square to Bills for 3-1. The fourth saw Dec head home from Bills corner. The fifth again saw Dec challenge for the header, this time after a goal mouth scramble Ste was the fox in the box to score the fifth. Macca produced a neat finish from the left for 6-1. A great through ball by Bills sent Pricey one on one. He nutmegged the keeper and just about managed not to get hurt in the process, 7-1. A great team performance with four subs on the scoresheet to emphasize the job the whole squad did today. Imperative we keep focussed and produce the same every week.
