The game kicked off ten minutes late. This was after Athletic strolled onto the pitch from the car park. Early on this should have told with Rovers pinning Athletic in their own box. Athletic kept trying to play from the back. Chance after chance seemed to come Rovers way. First two low crosses from the right found a Rovers player but failed to test the keeper. Ben swung in a great in-swinger, somehow the keeper kept Bills from bundling the ball over the line. A big chance came when Bills beat the last man and was taken down in the box. Unfortunately the scuffed penalty was parried away by the keeper. Rovers had to make changes when Ben and Ste were injured. We also saw yellow cards for Dec, Dee and Anto. Despite the issues we continued to cause problems. Manu had the biggest chance and forced a good save by the keeper at his near post. The final ball or finishing let us down. It was concerning at half-time that we weren’t a few goals up.
G told us we had to go out and grab the points.
Now with the wind behind us the game changed. Athletic saw more of the ball but failed to create clear chances. There was a big welcome back for Ricky in the second half. The closest Athletic came was from a few corners. The defence or Ricky’s big punch cleared these to safety. At the other end we broke regularly down both flanks. Again we just couldn’t find the target. Jonesy hit one effort on the volley that sailed over. Ross recovered an overhit cross and swung the ball back in from the right. Bills vollied home with aplomb. He was ruled offside; a harsh decision. After a few more breaks and chances it seemed this was going to be one of those days. However Ricky’s big kick set Bills on goal after the ball bounced and bypassed their entire team. Bills carried the ball into the box and this time smashed the ball in at the near post before the keepers hands had moved.
With Athletic pushing forward and tired legs on both sides the game was stretched and end to end. Fortunately the back four and the team as a unit did a great job. At the other end on the counter Rovers should have put the game to bed. Gav smashed the near post after a run down the left. Next the cross from the left found Ross at the back post forcing a good stop from the keeper. Ross must have been watching Vincent Company run the length of the pitch last week! Dave L swivelled and his shot from outside the box crept just wide. Tad burst into the box only to blaze over. More chances came and went. Fortunately the final whistle went before Athletic created a real chance.

Bills was all over this game. Lone striker. Misfiring. Penalty villain. Provider. Made a habit of being in the right place at the right time, despite not scoring he terrorized their centre-halves all game. The biggest attribute was to keep going, keep believing and finally took the thoroughly deserved winner without which we’d have dropped two points. Captains display.
Ref Watch
5/10
Don’t normally do these but you got the feeling he had it in for Rovers. The booking for Jonesy was nonsense if the earlier two could be called debatable. Should have sent off their defender for the penalty. Shouldn’t have disallowed Bills goal. On the positive side there have been worse referees!

Old enemies Hybrid (AFA). The biggest test of the season so far. They have taken two wins from two after starting the season late. They weren’t far behind us in the table last year. One win each in the head to head last season. One or both teams will lose their hundred percent start. We have to battle as a unit like we have in the last two games. We need to take our chances as there won’t be as many as today! Big game!!!
Seasons Goals:
4 Big Nathan,
2 Tad, Bills
1 Pricey, Ross, Ste, Fraser
