The Rovers reserve team looked to pick up where they left off last week with a win over in form whalley range, with whalley range winning 10-0 last weekend a lot of the lads were extremely apprehensive on what kind of team would turn up from the visitors, during the warm up the lads all breathed a sigh of relief as the whalley range team turned up with some familiar faces from last season.
So with the no new faces in the whalley range line up the game got underway and the visitors started on the front foot with a physical approach as they tried to bully the rovers players off the ball, knocking a lot of long balls over the top there was a lot of early pressure on our defence but they stood firm, it took a while for rovers to get into the game as they started knocking it about well and finally got into there passing game, as rovers settled into the game they looked comfortable on the ball especially George Soloman who had the beating of his fullback on several occasions and delivered in some dangerous crosses into the box, rovers first big chance came from
A looping cross from George which was headed onto the post by Alex, a couple of half chances came after that with some good dribbling from rob lead to him to cutting inside and getting his shot off which was just over, with rovers starting to take control of the game further up the field whalley range were giving away sloppy free kicks around there own area this gave Stephen the perfect chance to float one into the box, his cross met terry at the back post and when it looked easier to score terry somehow put his header over the bar, with chances going begging rovers started getting frustrated and against the run of play whalley range took the lead after a cross found their number at the back post waiting to the tap the ball home, with only 3 or 4 minutes to half time rovers got themselves back into with a lovely counter attack which found George in acres of room on the right hand side his dribble up the channel and bens run towards the front post left George the option to cross into the middle to Alex who found himself one on one with the keeper and Alex's cool finish to the right brought rovers level.
As the second half kicked off rovers were full of confidence that they could get slting from this game and started on the front playing it around nicely and after 10 minutes into the second half rovers were awarded a penalty, Alex with a neat turn in the box drew the foul from the whalley range defender who had no complaints, up stepped Stephen to try and convert the penalty and give rovers the lead feeling confident of not missing one in the last 2 years in the league had his tame penalty saved, a lot felt this might of been a turning point as whalley range continued to battle believing they could take all 3 points the defence remained firm as the pressure starting building, with a lot of corners for both teams it was rovers who would seize the opportunity as smart corner from Ben found eoin making his way into the box his sliced shot landed to terry who on the half volley curled it into the far corner giving rovers the lead, with 10 minutes remaining rovers found themselves up against it as corner after corner was awarded but everyone stood firm from Gavin in the sticks the big man up top Alex, with literally seconds to go rovers hearts were in there mouths when whalleys centre half was gifted a free header in the box which looked goal ward bound if not for Marc's brilliant block on the line.
MOM - Terry - i think everyone would be in agreement with this decision as he was extremely solid as shown great spirit from first whistle to last.
