Despite the forecast of heavy rain and gales the match today was played in near perfect conditions. Rovers were able to bring in over a years’ worth of training into the match. For twenty five minutes we dominated the match with passing football and looked dangerous in the final third. It was impressive that the football started from the backline through the midfield into attack with every single Rover contributing. An early chance came through Bills great work down the right. The breakthrough came when a through ball was touched by Mo into the area. Big Nathan beat the keeper to the ball, took a touch and swivelled before finding the bottom corner past the outstretched keeper. With rovers continuing to dominate a great build-up in the middle of the park through Owen and Mo saw Mo advance on the backline. Mo beat a couple of players, Bills made a great run to drag away two defenders, Mo then unselfishly squared to Fraser who was free on the left. A glorious chip saw Rovers double their lead and Fraser open his account for the season.
So far Caspian had threatened only with long, direct balls. They found the net on one occasion only to be ruled out for offside. This was a warning for Rovers. However Caspian made the change to put three in midfield and started causing Rovers problems. Dec made one last ditch slide tackle from behind their forward. A toe was enough to prevent a goal and possible red card, great tackle. However the pressure told and Caspian got their goal to half the deficit. for the remainder of the half Rovers managed to regain some control, Fraser went close only for the effort to be smothered by the keeper.
At half-time we were happy with the early football but Caspian had changed the game with their tactics. The challenge for the second half was to match them in every department.
Rovers began the second half well however Caspian were always a threat on the break. Despite Mo and Owen being excellent today and so far this season Dee came on and had a superb 45 minutes. Several last ditch tackles and interceptions thwarted potentially dangerous Caspian attacks; deservedly left the field with the captains’ armband. As the half wore on and Rovers legs tired Caspian did have a dangerous spell of pressure. Their best chance came when their forward shot from the right side of the area. It was heading for the keepers right corner but for a superb diving save from Dave who was also able to push the ball to safety.
At the other end one chance fell to Big Nathan who chested the ball down, Van Persie espque, only to pull his shot wide. Dee also just made it onto the end of a freekick but was unable to turn his effort goalwards. On the counter Owen played a one two and his left foot shot almost found the bottom corner but for a great save. Finally with time running out Jonesy was unable to find the corner after a great burst forward by Mo.
Goals:
Big Nathan, Fraser
Players Player
Gav
Several contenders, Mo made two goals, Owen got man of the match off the ref and to be fair a solid performance from all 16 who got on. Gav didn’t make the highlights above but gave a solid and disciplined performance at the back for Rovers. This contributed to Caspian never really looking like scoring despite their territory in the second half. Hopefully more to come.
Seasons Goals:
4 Big Nathan,
2 Tad
1 Pricey, Ross, Bills, Ste, Fraser
