For the second season Rovers began with a grudge match against rivals from the previous campaign. Kents signalled their intention by a player kicking Big Nathan off the ball and getting a booking within 15 seconds of the kick off. The game settled and Rovers looked comfortable and were beginning to threaten. At the other end Kents were swinging the early ball into the box or playing long diagonal balls which were bread and butter all game for the backline. We tried to be more direct and press Kents up the pitch. The first big moment saw Big Nathan burst down the right, lay the ball back to Pricey whose scuffed effort found Fraser for a tap in. However this was ruled offside. Next Big Nathan had his legs taken for a stone wall penalty. Masterman stepped up and would have found the bottom corner but for a great save by the keeper. Full credit to Mike who minutes later broke down the right and won a freekick. His delivery caused problems and found Big Nathan for a tap-in and deserved 1-0 lead. At the other end Dec and Ross mostly kept their forwards quiet. Kents best chance came from a freekick. This went over the wall and forced a superb save from stand-in keeper and Rovers legend Dave Lavelle.
At the break we knew we had to keep the same intensity, discipline and take our chances to guarantee the points.
Rovers began the second half on the front foot. We were still getting caught offside. Eventually Pricey managed to beat the offside trap, and after a great through ball from Nathan, Pricey carried the ball into the box and blasted his way to joint top scorer. Kents had the wind out of their sails. A Masterman freekick from the left wing found its way to Ross’s feet and an easy tap-in. Second opening day goal in succession (finished last season on one however so lets hope for an improvement). The rest of the match saw the wind become a big factor. The ball was pinned down our left wing and made for a scrappy match. However Rovers rose to the challenge of what Kents threw at us. This was especially the case for Dave L. There were at least two top class saves down to his left. The second bounced up awkwardly and was superbly touched over the bar. Rovers were always a threat on the counter. One floated cross from the left saw Big Nathan collide with their keeper who just got there first, got up and kneed Big Nathan in the head, not sure how he stayed on the pitch. Kents were able to get a consolation goal. A cross come shot from the left was headed past Dave by Masterman.
Nevertheless we held on for a deserved win. A great start after a big match. Next Sunday its AC Old Boys and the unknown quantity of a newly promoted team that will have made a habit of winning games last season.
Goals: Big Nathan, Pricey, Ross
Players Player
Dave Lavelle
As voted for in true Rovers tradition by the players in the pub after the match. Everyone gave a solid performance for the team. Masterman and Big Nathan both finished with one assist and one goal. The vote however went to Dave. A solid performance throughout, great handling in windy conditions and a couple of top class saves without which we may not have got all three points.
Seasons Goals:
1 Big Nathan, Pricey, Ross
Fact File:
In years to come Rovers fans everywhere will say this day, 1st September 2013, will always be remembered in Rovers history as the day Owen completed 90 minutes for Rovers; and in only his third season at the club. Congrats and lets hope for more to come.
