Rovers were decimated by injuries this week with Rachel G, Cris, Newman and Amanda all sidelined. Coach Graham therefore was forced to make a number of changes to personnel from the last match with at least five of the starting line-up being asked to play in unfamiliar positions.
This was the first time Rovers had played Middleton since the 2008-09 season when they first entered the league and despite the 5-0 scoreline, if consideration is given to the fact that three years ago Middleton routed Rovers by ten-plus goals, it is an indication of the progress they have made.
Rovers were on the back foot from the off yesterday but it took the home side until midway through the first half to break the deadlock, doing so with a shot from almost the halfway line which Kel had no chance with. In the absence of Cris, Sonia and Alison were excellent in the centre of defence and the whole back four made it tough for Middleton to break them down - a number of their goals came from set pieces and when Chloe saw her sliced clearance loop over Kel into the Rovers net, it gave the scoreline a gloss the home side were not entirely worthy of.
Rovers have a week off now before facing Middleton again, this time at Hough End and Graham told the players that with two good training sessions and players back from injury, they should be looking to make amends in a fortnight’s time.
Players’ player of the match – Kelly. The whole defence was brilliant yesterday but Kel got the votes for her string of fine saves; she was quick off her line as always to thwart the danger whenever she could. Well played Kel.
