Previous weeks’ reports have already mentioned Rovers’ current good run of form and it continued this week with their fifth win in six games, taking their season’s points tally to twenty one - more than they have ever accrued since they began in 2008. Although Oldham are bottom of the league, they battled well throughout the game, remaining organised and making it tough for Rovers for the first twenty minutes or so. Jen and Lena’s good attacking partnership was on display a number of times in the first half, Jen playing in the hole, helping to bring the midfielders into the attacking third and Lena playing on the shoulder of the last defender. Jen broke the deadlock midway through the first half and Lena added a second with a poacher’s finish from about a yard out.
Rovers lost captain Cris after half an hour with a back injury and were forced to reshuffle the defence, Sonia moving into the middle alongside Newman and Kath filling in at left-back; despite the loss of the loudest voice on the pitch, Newman and Sonia communicated well with the full-backs and Kel in goal to make sure the rearguard stayed tight throughout. Jen scored her second goal before half-time following up in the box to stab home from Rachel’s corner and give the greens a little more breathing space.
The second half started with wind, sleet and generally pretty Mancunian conditions but the weather didn’t affect Rovers’ game and they continued to apply pressure in Oldham’s half. Lena grabbed the fourth and final goal when she volleyed Chloe’s cross in from close range; Oldham rarely troubled Rovers’ defence who looked pretty solid all game. Rovers have now scored twenty seven goals and conceded only seven in their last five games.
Players’ player of the match – Jen. Often the creator of chances for others, Jen added to her own tally with two well taken goals and has been a really good addition to Rovers’ squad this season. Well played Jen.
