Rovers made it four wins out of five this year with another good performance against a young Denton side who had beaten them 1-2 in the reverse fixture, earlier in the season. Rovers adopted their most familiar 4-4-2 formation which appears to be serving them well at the moment, with usual central midfielder Rachel G absent, Alison McG slotted in to break up play effectively in the middle of the pitch. Denton were without a referee so each teams’ coach took charge of one half and both did a good job, the players hardly noticing they were there.
Rovers started the game well, Jen floating around in a number ten role linking the midfield and attack and Lena on the shoulder of the last defender so that the wingers knew they could rely on at least one body in the six yard box to aim for when crossing. For all Rovers’ probing and possession in the early stages though, it was Denton who took the lead after around twenty minutes. But Rovers responded well, and Nat equalised not long after with a close range effort following Chloe’s corner. Lena increased the advantage and added to her recent glut of goals, so at half-time the greens were 1-2 up but Graham reminded them of the need to remain focused in the second half.
Rovers played downhill after the break and used the sloping pitch to their advantage, creating numerous more chances and enjoying the opportunity to play some flowing attacking football. The deficit was increased further through Lena after unselfish work from Jen who played her in to finish coolly past the Denton ‘keeper.
So a fourth win out of five has seen Rovers move up to sixth in the table, they will be looking forward to playing bottom of the league Oldham Athletic next, before a tough trip to Middleton, whom they have not faced yet this season, a week later.
Players’ player of the match – Chloe. Well played everyone.
