This was Rovers’ first game for six weeks and they got the New Year off to a good start with three points against a young Heyside team on an unfamiliar 3G surface. It is often windy conditions when playing Oldham teams away from home but the hard, flat surface suited Rovers’ passing game and they started well, particularly on the left with Nat, Sonia and Jen linking up well and causing the Heyside defence some problems. Rovers went ahead after fifteen minutes or so when Jen made no mistake from close range. In the past Rovers have had a tendency to switch off and when they conceded two long-range efforts in quick succession on Sunday; one might have feared the worst. They didn’t panic though, but focused on playing their own game, bringing the ball out of defence and pressing Heyside - the rewards came when Hayley got Rovers’ second; a lovely left-footed strike and a good game from Hayley to make the most of her chance up-front.
Amanda also played in attack for the first time in a while and put Rovers ahead again before going on to add two more and record her first hat-trick of the season, on another day she might have had a double hat-trick given the number of chances the greens created after the break. There were further goals from Rachel G – a looping effort over the ‘keeper – and Lena who finished well shortly after coming off the bench. Rachael B and Nic also put in very good shifts when they were called upon and the fresh legs helped Rovers to keep pushing for more goals right until the end.
The players have been doing some additional fitness training in recent weeks and it showed during the game, everybody putting 100% effort in for the whole game. In the end Rovers had to settle for seven goals and will be pleased to have got some points on the board after a difficult and fruitless month, points wise, leading up to Christmas. One final word, this was the first Rovers side – men or women – to ever win on a 3G surface, another accolade the players will no doubt be proud of!
Players’ player of the match – a number of good performances this week but Amanda got the most players’ votes after her feast of goals and hard work up-front. Well played Amanda.
