On a very wet, cold and windy Manchester Sunday it was only the referee who wanted this game to go ahead with a lot of standing water on the pitch and both managers questioning the suitability of the playing surface. But credit to both teams who had a real go despite the difficult conditions, at times it threatened to descend into a mudbath and the game was not much of a footballing spectacle.
As mentioned in previous reports, Atherton are far and away the strongest and technically most competent team in the league so despite Rovers’ continued progress, they were always going to have a difficult task. Coach Graham set the team up with wing-backs in the first half and three in the middle of the park – Rachael Brown made an impressive debut and Sonia did a good job in an unfamiliar midfield role. In the second half Rovers reverted to a 5-4-1 formation with Jen up front on her own and Amanda playing at right back, a job she did very well and sent some decent balls down the line with her strong passing.
Rovers play Atherton for the third and final time this season this coming Sunday and will be glad to be able to focus on picking up points again against different opposition, after playing them three times in four weeks. The greens have been working on some specific tactics at training this week though, to try to neutralise Atherton’s threat and will be hoping that it comes to fruition on Sunday.
Players’ player of the match – there was no one winner this week but it was a decent spirited performance from all twelve players in horrible conditions. Well done everybody.
