This was Rovers’ second cup match in two weeks against a decent Curzon side that had only narrowly beaten them 2-3 on the opening weekend of the season. Adopting a different 4-2-1-2-1/4-3-2-1 system (I had to think about that), Graham asked the players to try to take their game to Curzon early on. With Jen and Nic taking it in turns to spearhead the attack, the idea was for Chloe and Rachel to support the forwards and Nat and Jess to shield the back-four in more defensive midfield roles.
Rovers started the game reasonably well but found themselves behind after twice giving away possession cheaply on the right hand side, Curzon got a third and at half-time were 0-3 up. That perhaps was not a fair reflection of the overall game though; Nic T in particular had caused the away team’s defence problems with some surging runs.
At the break Graham asked the players to go out and win the second half and the greens played a lot better in the second forty-five, Jess and Rachel linking well with the attackers and producing some good passing football. Rovers could have pulled a goal back when Jen’s looping shot pressed the Curzon keeper to tip the ball over the bar; the breakthrough finally came after a Rovers knock down from a corner was swept into the net by Chloe at the back post. Curzon got a goal back and so it ended 1-4, unfortunately by the end goalkeeper Amanda had injured her thigh and was struggling to kick.
Although a run of five defeats might suggest Rovers are not playing well, the team has been playing ok and the team spirit is very good. The restructure of the leagues this season means Rovers are now playing against a number of teams that were at a higher level last year. The greens continue to evolve as a unit, with the established players getting to know the new additions and vice versa which will make for a well rounded mix of ‘experience and youth’ and a bright future for this team.
Players’ player of the match – Nat. It’s the second week running that Nat has won this – again she had a really good game as one of two holding midfielders, breaking up play and protecting the back four. Well player Nat.
