Rovers continued their run of decent performances with a solid but unlucky display against Denton. Missing usual skipper/centre-half Cris through injury, Sonia and Newman were at the heart of the defence and both had good games working as a solid pair and communicating well with the full-backs and goalkeeper. Unfortunately though the referee seemed to take a while to get switched on and allowed a blatantly offside Denton forward to put the ball in the net straight from the first kick-off, this was the start of a poor match for the official who lacked authority and did not make his decisions clear throughout. Despite going a goal behind so early though, it was Rovers who created the majority of the chances in the first half, Lena and Chloe putting shots just wide, Alison heading just over from a corner and Rachel going close with a free-kick. The pressure told after half an hour or so after good work in midfield between Rachel, Nat and Alison; Alison went free on the right to cross into the box and Chloe was in the right place to fire home the rebound off the keeper. Rovers conceded a second shortly after despite Kel’s best efforts and went in 1-2 down at half-time.
The second half was much the same, minus the goals – Rovers created some decent chances and on another day would have converted them; but playing with no real recognised strikers, it was going to be tough going forward. Nic made her full Rovers debut and despite some pre-match nerves combined well with Lena and Kath on the left, Hayley also injected some fresh impetus when she came on. The Rovers defence held firm in the second period and Kel was also on hand to make a couple of brave saves - Amanda, stand-in keeper for the season so far will be delighted with Kel’s performance!
Players’ player of the match – Kelly. In her first full game in nets, Kel put in a fearless display. She made life difficult for the Denton forwards, coming off her line to good effect and making some very brave saves, she has been working on her kicking and this showed both off the floor and out of her hands. Well played Kel.
