Rovers’ opposition this week was what seemed to be a team made up of players from the defunct Oldham Vixens and a smattering of Stockport, so some familiar faces whom Rovers were hoping to avenge for their defeat on the last day of the 2010-11 season. The first twenty minutes was fairly even, Oldham can be dangerous with their big pacy centre forward, but the Rovers defence dealt with her effectively for most of the first half and looked good going forward with Belinda and the rest of the midfield supporting Jen well. This pressure paid after half an hour or so when some good link-up play in midfield sent Be clear for her to beat the full-back for pace and slot the ball calmly past the ‘keeper. Rovers were looking good at this point and increased the arrears not long after when Jen scored a lovely left footed goal from the left-hand side of the box, which the ‘keeper had no chance with. As previously mentioned though, Oldham do have some good attacking players and pulled a goal back before the break with a well taken lob over Amanda which she could do little about.
So at half-time Rovers were 2-1 up and Graham stressed to the players the need to go out and try and win the second half as well. However, and for reasons still unknown, Rovers can have a habit of lacking concentration and this was the story of much of the second half. Oldham pulled a goal back shortly after the re-start and took confidence from it and whilst Rachel scored a lovely volleyed goal from the edge of the box to keep the greens in the game, the home side went on to score two more and take all three points. Rovers were unlucky as well in that captain and ever-present last season, Cris, had to go off with an ankle injury – here’s to a hasty recovery Cris.
Afterwards Graham emphasised the need to stay switched on for the whole ninety minutes but also reaffirmed that in places Rovers had played some very good, effective, attacking football and that if the team can iron out the silly errors and get the basics right, they could be a match for anybody in this league.
Players’ player of the match – a joint award to Alison McG and Rachel. McG had a really good game in midfield, breaking up play and getting forward to good effect, going close to scoring both with her head and with a shot that went just wide. Rach as always was a driving force in midfield, covering what seemed to be every blade of grass and topping it off with a classy goal. Well played Alison and Rach.
