At their new home ground Rovers started the 2011-12 season with an encouraging performance, despite missing a number of last season’s established players and having had no pre-season friendlies to prepare. Curzon were the first of a number of teams Rovers have not faced before and they by no means outclassed the greens over ninety minutes, despite the final result. Having lost last season’s goalkeeper, Katri, Amanda sacrificed her place upfront and went in goal, unfortunately Rovers were 0-2 down after twenty five minutes – all in agreement they were two soft goals which might have been dealt with better. Rovers’ heads did not drop though and they pulled a goal back before half time, good pressure from Belinda and the Rovers midfield forcing a mistake from the Curzon centre-half who lobbed her own ‘keeper.
The second half saw a number of Rovers chances they were unlucky not to put away - new striker Jen hitting the bar from distance, Rachel going close with a direct free-kick and Cameron hitting the bar with a close-range header. The breakthrough eventually came via Jen’s left-footed free-kick from twenty yards out after Cam had been fouled, it was perfectly executed to give her the goal she deserved on her debut. Curzon restored the lead with around fifteen minutes to go and despite the increased pressure, Rovers could not find an equaliser, so it ended 2-3.
A decent first performance from Rovers, if they continue to play as they did on Sunday it won’t be long before they register their first win of the season. Another positive was the strength of the squad with fifteen players available on Sunday, at least four more missing and extras still to sign on. Also great to see Sonia back from maternity leave – we knew she couldn’t stay away long
Players’ player of the match – Jen. An excellent display from Jen who linked midfield and attack to good effect and scored a technically great goal. Well played Jen.
