After a three week break Rovers might have been rusty in their final league cup game of the 2010-11 season but fitness levels remained good and had it not been for two very early goals which caught them napping, they might have taken something from this game. The conditions were not conducive to keeping the ball on the ground as the greens prefer; a high sloping field in the Oldham hills coupled with the pitch recently starved of moisture and swirling wind made it almost impossible to control the ball to any good effect.
Vixens were clearly used to playing in these conditions and made the most of the downhill advantage in the opening exchanges, their first goal after Rovers had lost possession in midfield and the second a long-shot soon after, which rocketed into the net with the help of the wind. Rovers pulled one back after good build up on the right wing involving Nat and Alison F saw Amanda make no mistake from close range following Belinda’s centre. Rovers struggled to pass the ball around moving uphill though and Vixens scored another long-range effort to go in 3-1 up at half-time.
In the second half Rovers had more possession in Vixens’ half and were trying everything with the aid of the wind to beat the Vixens keeper, Belinda going close a number of times and Chloe hitting the bar twice - from a free-kick and a corner; on another day perhaps these would have gone in. Amanda has made a habit of scoring some crackers this season and her second did not disappoint, a fierce shot from the edge of the box which cannoned in off the bar (perhaps the wind may have helped a little...) and ensured that she wins the Rovers golden boot this term. For the last fifteen minutes Rovers changed formation to 3-4-3 in a an effort to reduce the arrears, and they did so when the keeper had a horror moment and allowed Chloe’s scuffed shot to slip through her legs and over the line. But for all their endeavour Rovers could not find the back of the net again to take something from the game.
So it ended in a defeat for the greens but as they have agreed all season the team is evolving nicely and with the possible restructure of the leagues next season it will be refreshing to play an increased number of different teams and for Rovers to test themselves in a larger league.
Players’ player of the match – Kelly. In her first start for Rovers Kel put in a really good performance at the back; enthusiastic throughout and strong in the tackle she should take much encouragement from this into future games. Well played Kel.
